For me the ergonomics, menus, button placement and the depth of the right hand grip are much better. The lines and contour on the Canon's feel better in my hand. I have a fairly small hand and I always felt that I was adjusting to the Nikon but never really got there.

I joined Nikon Cafe right after buying the D300 and I've been a contributor mostly in the lens lust forum. I enjoy it there but it can get a bit 'click' ish and at times I don't particularly care for the way that some members are elevated to some weird celebrity status simply because they shoot their fast glass wide open. I won't mention names but some of it is godawful and I have no idea why everyone goes ga-ga over it.

Hm, I have sort of small hands too. That's why I love my D40 so much. Even if I went Canon I'd probably keep it until it died and then sell my Nikkor glass.

I know what you're talking about in terms of NC being clique-y, but I have no clue what you're referring to re wide open shooting. LOL, sounds weird to say the least. That forum is just not nearly as good as this one and that's why I joined here. There is no Nikon forum quite like it. I'm a gearhead so you may not get this reference but this place is like the VWVortex of photography forums.

All I mean is that many people that own the 85mm f/1.4 and 50mm f/1.2 AI-S shoot wide open and don't seem to have a clue as to how to properly shoot with such shallow depth of field that they just make a big mushy mess where you can barely identify the point of focus and all they are concerned about is bokeh but they forget that the subject of an image is important. When I see an image of a flower in the foreground and the very tip of one petal of the flower is in focus and everything else is blurry I just don't get it. But everyone else goes "oooo" and "aaaaa". Ick!

Regarding the feel of the camera. The Nikon is more of a brick, or a rectangular shape. The Canon is a bit more stealthy and the slope of the right side of the body fits better in the hand when your hand is smaller.

LOL... You made me look through the 85/1.4 thread and the "Wide Open Thread." Because of this thread I'll be looking at the 5D2 much more closely. I know it is a massive step up from a D40 but I simply feel like most APS-C cameras would be a sidestep or a very minor step forward. Now, all I have to do is get some good glass first. If it's Canon glass it will probably be sitting on my desk for about a year and then I'll get a body.

The more you look the more you'll see what I mean. Take a look at the 50mm f/1.2 AIS threads as well. Double ick!

You use the system that you feel most comfortable with.
Canon or Nikon...they more or less get you to the same place.

Welcome back! :-)

Thanks Nicksan. I agree completely. It's about comfort level, the images you produce and in some cases, the fun factor. I've come full circle and realized that I'm happiest shooting Canon. It's like coming home

I for one have appreciated that you've stayed around in the lighting forum. I've learned quite a bit from your posts. :)

Hope there is room for one more on this forum. I like Robert started having concerns and issues with gear from the other side. It got to the point that I said it was time. I made the switch a few days ago and though I not 100% comfortable with my gear the first few outings with it are proof enough to my eyes that I did the right thing. I've decided to get my feet wet sort to speak with a 5D MkII. To me it was the frustration of Nikon Glass not being up to the standards for image quality that Canon is currently offering. There have been to many introductions and announcement to consumer grade lenses with variable slow apertures, you know like f/5.6. It seemed to me and those that know me though I had a very considerable collection of Nikkor lenses and Nikon bodies they were not delivering the results that those guys from the white side were producing. Much of the experience I know is subjective and personal. We all should use those tools to do the job in the manor we feel best but having taken that stance I felt let down by my popular brand of almost 40 years. Anyway I'm glad to be aboard.

Welcome back! I got my 5DII 2 months ago and couldn't be happier. I just shot the YouTube Symphony last week with the 5DII and 70-200 2.8 IS. I didn't know it was allowed at Carnegie Hall for the event, so that's all I had for tele. Oh, it was a treat. Even my least amount of gear did an amazing job with no flash allowed. I had very little noise while others struggled. I'm glad you have decided to come back Canon. Not to say the other is crap, just that I am loving the gear I do have.

i hear you Suzy.....the other gear doesn't even exist to me. i love what i have and i couldn't imagine anything being better :D.

Welcome back Rob! Although in our eyes you never 'left', since you've always been a valuable member of the POTN family.

Don't ditch your 105 2.5 Ai-S, that lens is gonna scream on the 5D Mark II. I love my Nikkor 105 2.5 Ai, one of the best lenses I've ever owned, and for the $80 I paid for it, it sure gives my 135L a run for its money optically.
