That's what i Have, 4800x2 and 4gig of ram runs fast but I want faster, intel quad core is my next build. i have a copy of Vista but don't know if I should use it, I love XP pro but limited to 3 gb of ram. I want more RAM. The more the better.

I ran Vista x64 for over a year and now W7 x64 for a few months and both work very well... even better with a state of the art rig.

Hmmm I might just make the jump and get the option to feed more RAM. I figure with vista you need to run a quadcore 3ghz a grip of RAM and you should see it perform optimally. Running vista on a minimal requirement setup makes you hate it. I can always switch back if I hate it. I also game and some of my favorite games might not like vista. I guess it is just me.

I'm very happy with my Q6600@3.2GHz now +8GB of RAM running OS X... ;)
PIX, Neat Image has said that profiles deisgned for windows 5.x and 6.x will work fine for mac 4.x, so I think I am going to buy a copy of NI Pro and FlexNR 2.0 and try my luck ;)

Mark:

They will work, for sure... but you will need to re-record each and every call to NI stored in FlexNR.

It is perfectly doable, but be aware that FlexNR is no couple-of-commands, wrote-in-ten-minutes action. On the contrary, it is a pretty extensive and structured collection of calls to profiles, presets, masking, layers, image processing, etc.

Make sure you get proper assistance here, when re-cording such NIPro calls. You will have to do so everytime I drop a new release.

Kind regards,

PIX

im on 64 and it works fine... i didnt have to do anything fancy to get it to work... just followed instructions as listed and it works a treat...

using the black dot despeckler works so well !

had some funny masking on one image with the white... but need to test it more - not at 1am ... :)

Pix, am I correct that with on 64 bit systems, you still need to make a directory in the PROGRAM FILES for the profiles, as I did with the older versions?

Great job on the results Super Nicko. I just use the Despeckler default at the top of the actions. It basically activates the Despeckle Shadows HF Bright part, and works amazing to get rid of any white specs with no affect on detail. The Despeckle Shadows HF Dark doesn't do much for me, as Pix mentioned, it's more for the upcoming 40D FlexNR.

Btw, you used to pick your 5D over the 1D MKIII for high ISO? The 1D MKIII is much better in that regard over the original 5D.

I installed the 64 bit version of the neat image photoshop plugin and it put a "Neat Image for Photoshop" folder in program files. I assume thats where the profiles need to go.

Notes on VISTA Installation...

drisley wrote in post #8259660 (external link)
Pix, am I correct that with on 64 bit systems, you still need to make a directory in the PROGRAM FILES for the profiles, as I did with the older versions?

For WinXP:

Well, in essence, the calls to the core-engine (NeatImagePro) are recorded under the WinXP directory structure for program files:

C:\Program Files\Neat Image\PROFILES

It is there where you are supposed to COPY the supplied "EOS 1D MarkIII" folder, stored in FlexNR's ZIP file. That's all.

For VISTA:

Now, in Vista, the "C:\Program Files" section of the above directory is called differently, and based on previous tests that Drisley's reported to me, that was enough to throw the pre-recorded calls in FlexNR out of course.

Therefore, there are at least two simple solutions:

a. To supply the "C:\Program Files\Neat Image" directory name during the installation of NeatImage, ...OR...

b. To manually create the "C:\Program Files\Neat Image\PROFILES".

Once created (in any way), you simply COPY the supplied "EOS 1D MarkIII" folder into the newly created "C:\Program Files\Neat Image\PROFILES" path, and voila! You should up and running immediately.

If anyone has any issue or question regarding the above explanation or you are experiencing different results, please, post your questions, as you should not have any problems, whatsoever.

Cheers,

PIX

Interesting idea... My suggestions...

Super-Nicko wrote in post #8257410 (external link)

what the hell am i supposed to do now when i need to shoot high iso? ive always gone for the 5d or 5d2 in the past? sell it?

...With respect the 5D2, you would need to consider two things:

1. 21 Mpixels.
2. 1080p video.

If you are absolutely sure that your work or needs will not depend on these two features, then I would suggest you to:

1. Sell the 5D2 and cash it in now, when you can get the most out of it.
2. Put that money in the bank.
3. Retain the 5D as backup.
4. When the 1D4 comes out, sell the 5D, collect your saved cash above, and buy it.
5. You will end up with a formidable duo: a brand-new 1D4, backed up now by your 1D3.

Now, I mind that the results you are going to get with the 1D3+FlexNR are most likely going to be on-par or better than the 1D4 (for very specific tech. reasons). Therefore, if its 15-16 Mpixels are not key for you, and you still do not need the 1D4's video, then I would invest the 5D2 cash in ultra cool GLASS, such as the upcoming ultracool EF 24-70 f/2.8 L IS .

Just some late-friday thoughts.

Cheers,

PIX

Ok was having some buggy issues with vista 64 - just made the new subdir and all works as it should... i wonder if this had been skewing my results before too!

Amazing initial results on a quick test image - ISO6400 - underexposed by 1 stop.. used ISO 12800 action and despeckler for results that really are quite amazing.

Nice job PIX.

See my test shots here for all those interested in an amatuer photographers point of view. This really would bring this photo from being a bin job to usable should it have captured something worthwhile.

Thanks, Nicko, for the time and effort.

Impressive results, by any account. The EOS 1D MarkIII is now (and officially) a best-in-class, ISo12,800 workhorse, without any reservations.

Final TIPs for optimizing ZB/RIT conversions for ISO12,800+ usage:

1. Right after loading the .PF2 in ZB/RIT (and dialing 1.00+ec over ISo6400 frame), try:

a. Sharpness values between ZERO (0) and TWO (+2).
b. For denser color response, slide Saturation back to ZERO (0), middle.

2. Make sure ColorSpace is AdobeRGB and NR = OFF, right below the (Sh,Cont.,Sat.,Tone) panel in ZB/RIT. The reason is that these two variables DO NOT get set by the .PF2, because Canon seems not to store ColorSpace setting or NR values in the .PF2.

Cheers, and keep up the good work,

PIX

Just so im clear... if i need to push the exposure say 1 stop +, will i do that in raw before i convert to TIFF? I thought i saw somewhere to leave it at 0 and convert to tiff - then do FLEXNR for the pushed setting (say 12800 in this case) then push the exposure??

ive always done my EC+- in RAW in the past... let me know

just added another quick shot of my son at ISO 10,000 and a flower one at ISO 25600

just for those who are cynical - Get your camera out and shoot something in the light we are talking about... the last shot of my son was in such bad light - i know my 5d2 would have stuggled to focus, even at ISO 6400 incam and f2.8 (what i had on) and 1/40 i got a shot underexposed by 2/3 stop

not award winning photography here - but im never going to be afraid to get the shutter speed i want as my last compromise and push that ISO right up...

i mean thats the impact here isnt it - on our actual in the hands photography - squeezing the last scrap of light and information from every pixel when the camera is already pushing sh!t uphill...

Perfect, that's exactly the way to go. All before conversion.

TIP: set Sharpening to ZERO (0) in ZB/RIT Picture Style panel. You are going to pull out a smoother looking file, while still detailed enough. FlexNR will handle the necessary sharpening to compensate the absence of RAW-conversion sharpening.
