...If you would like an actionable/reliable starting point, I would simply do exactly what you are doing, except disabling NR and Sharpening in LightRoom, and then finish the processing (in one step) in Photoshop, where FlexNR resides.

That would be all.

If there is any specific sample you would like to process, let me know. You can send it via www.yousendit.com (external link) (either a .JPG or a CR2 at any ISO speed you may want, as long as it is not blury or OOF). I will try to process it tonight, with the exact same approach as described above.

Since I've never used PS before I don't know how to sharpen with it. I'm use to the sliders in LR.

So I shouldn't sharpen before going to PS for FlexNR? Would sharpening the file after it comes back from PS/FlexNR work okay? Or is this not advisable?

Thanks.

There are two LR presets you run one after you import in to LR the do some global adjustments then run the second preset which automatically set the sharpening and noise reductions sliders in LR to 0. Export at tiff 16bit prophotoRGB no compression in to PS then run the needed ISO level action then run either a smart sharpen or unsharpenmask which ever you prefer.

Did you run the despekle action after the 6400is action? Not to shaby for iso 6400.

I recently shot a indoor sport event and had to shoot a lowest iso1600 max iso6400 but was comfortable at 3200. Here is a link to the gallery of my shots. My imahes start on page 5 LFL291 to LFL431. All images batch processed. Just thought I would share a little trick i use in order to batch procces keeping all the stage in each iso level action.

Step 1: open a single image at each iso level.
step 2.: Create a new action and named it what ever pleases you. For me I named mine '3200iso convert unsharpen' I have the action run, then convert the profile from prophoto RGB to SRGB then ran an unsharpen mask.
Step 3: whle the action is recording first run the iso level action need.
Step 4: once the iso level action is complete, i then did a profile convertion. Edit: Convert profile: selet srgb, click ok.
Step 5: Run either an USM or smart sharp on the image.
Step 6: stop action
Step 7: (optional) Ceck the box to the left of the sharpening portion of the action so it brings the pop up window for you to adjust the sharpening levels for each image.
Step 8: Now when you want to batch process. File: automated: batch then select the action you just created and run it on all the images you bacth. But remember to creat the action for iso800, iso 1600 and so on. I ran them on all my shots from the game and all shots had the same level sharpening applied so i did not have to have the box to the left of the sharpening portion checked. Saved me about 1hr in post.

Thaough I would share this very helpfull tip with all the FlexNr users.

Sevan

p.s. here is the link to the event i shot.

Event main page. I did the little write up and pics on front page are mine along with the main image.

Now you do not have to convert and sharpen in the same action.

Hi,

When running the FlexNR action for LR 1600 ISO RAW I get the error:
The command "Expand" is not currently available.
This only occurs on some photos. Do you know why this would happen?

Thanks.

edit: this occurs in despeckle - shadows - hf - bright, expand

I think this might be related to a very low degree of contrast in the photo. I think PIX should be along shortly with a more specific/technical answer.

From my guess, I think this error can be ignored by just continuing with the action. Unfortunately, this screws up my batch processing of images.

NOTE: if you encounter this situation frquently (e.g. low contrast/lack of deep blacks), I suggest you to simply disable de-speckling for optimal, hands-off batch processing).

The solution to this issue has been already identified, it is being coded (and further tested), and will be addressed in next release.

Any further questions, please, let me know.

I'm continued to be amazed by FlexNR, and I'm getting results that are at least on par with what I see from the D3s and 1D4, with our without a vanilla NR program.

This 50% crop was taken in my bedroom with only a 40w wall light across the room, handheld at only 1/25s, F2.8, ISO6400. I'm blown away. I mean it's not just a very high ISO, it's also about as low as I would ever go in shutter speed handheld.

Thank you again Pixmantra! And happy holidays!

Do you mean without FlexNR? Or 100% as opposed to 50%?
I don't think I have the original before FlexNR anymore.
