50mm f/1.4 hood in situ; 10-22 don't have a lens hood; 100 macro hood stored inside 100-400 hood, both of which are in the middle of my Flipside 300 for easy access.....BUT(!) I'm looking for a new bag that will cope with my 30D with 100-400 attached (hood reversed) plus one other lens plus flash only, for trips out where I want to delibrately restrict myself....does the Domke F2 fit that bill? Or is it too big?

the f2 has no padding except the "board" in the bottom which is removable. i've owned the f2 and i now own the f-1x. in the f1-x i can carry the 100-400L mounted on my 1d mark III with hood on (not reversed) as well as the other stuff that you mention with no problem. if you reverse the hood i'm pretty sure the f2 will give you plenty of room.

when either bag is lightly packed it doesn't feel "big".

Thanks Ed.

I'm still not sure which line to go with, and I'm going to my local photo shop later in the week, so I'll see what they have.....

Doesn't fit in their dividers. Suppose I want to fit 16-35, 24-70, 70-200, 100-400 on provided dividers. I have room left over for camera and small lens mounted, let's say 135L. If I remove hoods, I can fit all that and more. But where do I put the hoods?

depends on the lens....my 24-70L with bucket hood reversed will fit in one pocket of a four pocket divider but it makes the other pockets tighter. i agree that the pockets could be bigger and there is something about every bag that i've ever owned that has frustrated me :D.

:lol::lol::lol:

Tell me about it....

Bags and tripods - my curse!!!

Over the years, those two together have almost cost me as much in wasted money as a decent L-lens!

Ed,

Here's the problem I'm trying to solve. I use Pro Belt when I'm shooting. I have 24-70 and 16-35 inside Trim Change w/o the hood. 70-200 on my camera. I am wondering how to carry the hood without taking off the backpack. I don't use F-2 to carry a lot but their insert has no room for hood like Trim Changer so I figure I get some pointers from Domke users. As you can see on top picture that there is no room for the hoods.

BTW, Antidote arrived couple of days ago. Thicker than I expected but it's working out fine so far. Bottom one is Antidote. :D

I'll put the 70-200 hood in the outside pocket. Plus this way, you can put stuff that's a bit more fragile in as well.

Domkes interior pockets are not made for L lenses with hoods... that sucks big time....

It seems like they got stuck i the old manual days when lenses where like 35, 50 and 105mm. the most basic of any photo journo 16-35, 24-70 and 70-200 just forget about it!!

Then try being a bit creative...

Get the single section inserts. Replace the foamy inserts with thin plastic (cut, for example, from plastic sided 3-ring binders). This will retain their shape and still provide protection from parts banging together.

You can now arrange these in the bag anyway you want: 1x2, 1x3, 2x2, etc. Use industrial strength velcro to hold the sections to each other.

These will now easily be able to hold a 24-70 or 70-200 with hood reversed.

No sectioned bag I know of will hold a 16-35 with hood reversed....these (and similar wide zoom) hoods are just too wide....but after putting the 16-35 in the section, you can usually angle the hood on top of it and it will stay in place.

I don't use the stock dividers. All mine have the 3-compartment 720-230, which is slightly bigger; it takes the hoods for the 24-70, 70-200 2.8 or 100-400 just fine. Domke has an alternate 4-compartment insert as well, the 720-245W, which has two slightly larger and 2 smaller compartments in the "normal" square arrangement.

I've also used OpTech Hood Hats as lens hood holders, with a smaller one inside the hood to allow me to put something else (like a smaller lens) inside.
