I buy from stores close to me that I can actually walk into. Lenses though, I have bought online many times.

Living in the NYC area, Adorama and B&H. Both have recently remodeled their stores and they offer a much more organized shopping experience than previously.

Lately more skewed toward Adorama in-store because I have been attending a number of their in-store workshops, which are a great value and always very informative. But I have also purchased via the internet from both, and service is quick and excellent.

The sites that most keep listing are the ones that I kept out of the equation but that's okay, I guess they're that good no matter what. So no one else has really bought outside of the popular sites? I've read a couple of posts in the past about getting great deals that are nothing like what I see on BH and Amazon, ex. 1D mark III for 3000 new. but they don't share their secret.

For what it's worth ... My first digital camera I bought online in 1999. Can't even remember the company but a few people on another forum said they had an ok transaction from this company. I placed my order. Two weeks later and not hearing from them I called their office. They had my name and order but were waiting to hear from me ...HUH ??? ... " Do you need a flash for the camera?", "Memory?" "Extra battery?" "Tripod?" I answered no to all. They the told me my order would be filled within a few weeks IF an order came in, no promises! A few weeks? You list them as "In Stock"? That was for camera AND accessories! Canceled order!
Tried another company that also listed the camera "In Stock". They took my order, sent me confirmation and withdrew the money from my checking account. A few weeks later after not receiving the camera I called ... the camera was backordered! Do I cancel or wait? I waited. It finally arrived about a month after ordering.

When it came to buying my Canon and what I wanted to purchase with it ($$$$), no monkey business. I ordered it from Adorama and it was delivered the next day ... no hassle, no backorders, none! Just excellent service & delivery for what I ordered! Same as every transaction from them ... and there have been MANY! Same with B&H except they haven't received as many orders from me.

It's nice to shop around for best deals and so on but after that first camera ... never again! If it's a bit more to pay for, the peace of mind is well worth it.

Lucky You NYC people, I would love to visit B&H or Adorama. As for my first 20D in 2005 I had to cough it up and by it from Wolf Camera. But I now i would probobly go there and play with a camera i want, and then order one from B&H.

I bought both my bodies (30D & 40D) locally. It costs a bit more, but I did it for ease of return in case something is wrong. This worked out for me on the 30D as my first one had a loose screw inside that fell out when I first took off the lens cap. Having bought it locally, the exchange was pretty quick and painless.

I'll buy local and pay the extra. Cross border shopping at this moment in time is more expensive or equivalent.

Americans have it good. Shipping is ridiculously pennies compared to shipping with couriers in Canada and Canada post is a brutal ripoff.

If a Canadian buys from Adorama or B&H they are still eligible for a shipping voucher but those are only applicable in the US. This would require a drive to the border.

I purchased a 50D locally and with the Canadian $$ conversion it was cheaper than B&H.

b&h has never really given me a compelling reason to purchase from anywhere else.
