I recently bought an XTI camera that came with 2 lenses. One of them is a Tamron 28-80mm AF lens. It has a plastic bayonet mount instead of the metal type on the other lens.

Short story long, 2 of the 3 plastic mounting tabs are broken (one completely off and the other partially broken).

My question, is this lens totally pooched or is there some way to fix the mounting tabs? I've been looking through eBay, and have seen adapters to change from one lens type to the EF lens and was wondering if it would be possible to adapt one of them to the lens. I was also wondering if I could use something like JBWeld (a 2 part epoxy that is strong as steel), to repair the tabs. I've used it to fix headlight mounts on my car, a broken turn signal light on my scooter, and the microphone mount on my son's 360 headset.

I am pretty handy at McGuyvering things and if the lens if useless anyway, I don't mind playing around.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks...
Al

Well...my question is why bother?

Its probubly not worth macguyvering something when you could easily get a lens of equal or greater performance for the cost of fixing it

thats god's way of telling you there is not much point buying a dslr and a crappy lens. Its like buying a 1000 stereo and 50 dollar speakers.

Thanks for the quick reply folks.

I bought the camera and the 75-300 lens, and the shop where I bought them threw in the other lens. I knew it was broken, but thought, what the heck. I also know the lens doesn't cost all that much to buy new.

Really don't want to put much money, if any, into trying to fix it. If I go with the JBWeld route, than I can do it for only a couple of bucks. An adapter route would be maybe $20. Any more than that, and it wouldn't be worth fixing.

As for why MacGuyvering it? To see if it is possible and I like a challenge. There is also a part of me that hates to dispose of things if they can be fixed. Just more stuff for the landfill...

Just doesn't make a lot of sense to me why they would use plastic for the mount. The tabs are so small and thin, stuff like this is bound to happen.

Muchly appreciated.

Today's society has become a disposable society. I know some folks where if something breaks, even if it is minor, they just throw it away and buy knew. I've been trying to instill different values in my son. I will also donate items to Goodwill or Value Village where they can still be put to good use.

Hope it is rubbing off on him...
