I had a Markins A-S clamp on the top of a simple tilt head on my Manfrotto monopod and it worked very well. The 3232 shown below has been replaced by the 234.

Had one of those and also one of the RC2 models - they just didn't stay solid enough even with my 100-400. Went to the RRS MH-1 and have had no problems with any lens I've used it with.

I use two tripods...

Giottos MT8180 full sized tripod with Giottos MH-1300 head with A/C quick release for most general tripod work...

Modified SLIK Pro 330DX with short center column and Flashpoint F-1 A/C head, weighing about two pounds total, for travel and boonie tromping. Short but sturdy and lightweight...

Gitzo explorer 2541 EX (external link) with Arca Swiss Z1 (external link) for macro and general photography. The QR clamp is the older version which does not accomodate the safety stops of certain Arca Swiss style of QR plates.

Gitzo ocean traveller GT1541 (bought as GK1581OT (external link) but taken out the crap head use only when underwater). On land when travelling I replace with a Markins Q3T (external link).

The head shown on the monopod is mounted on either tripods for video panning use. Gitzo fluid head G2180 (external link) mounted with a wimberly QR clamp C10 (external link) now discontinued.

owning a induro CT-014 is grate for a travel tripod and adding a RRS BH55 to the top of it makes it vary solid, but i really need a bigger set of legs, looking to pick up ether the RRS or a gitzo 2540 because beefier legs are needed, i be leave with tripods one should start at the top end and buy the best and never having to back track.

Very happy with my mix: Arca Swiss Z1 with RRS LR clamp, on a Gitzo 3530 tripod.

^ I've now put a RRS lever clamp on my Z1 as well, and I've moved the head a a 4-series Benro tripod.

1. Legs – Microphone base
2. Head – Rigged from a broken Hakuba table top tripod
3. Notes - Good for P&S cameras only, at very low to ground shots. Too heavy to carry around.

Legs: Feisol Tournament CT-3442 Rapid without center column (22lb load capacity)

Head: Sirui K-30x (66lb load capacity)

Note: Holds 22lb (10kg) very well i would say even more. Folds small and with legs reversed towards the head it fits fine into the matching tripod bag. Very sturdy, very light, reasonably high even without the center column (i think for guys from 1.7m to 1.85m no problems) and goes down very low. The head is superbly qualitative for the price and holds very nice, no sag or droop even with almost 8kg on it. Totally in love with this setup as it is very light, small foldable to carry it around without pain on your shoulders... Perfect as an allround tripod (travel and studio) and got this setup for about 500$
