Who has used the 5DII for sports?

I'm leaving the 40D behind me now, and I'm graduating to a new camera. My tastes and shooting needs, want a 1D MkIII, but my budget tells me that a new 5D MkII is a more realistic purchase.

I currently cover all types of photography. I shoot models, night clubs, ball sports and motor sports, with the occasional wedding tossed in.

Are any of you using this body for sports? How is the focus tracking in AIServo? My main hang up over buying this camera is the focus. Will this focus as quickly and accurately as my 40? or a new 50? I don't need FPS, I got over that.

Can you 5DII owners weigh in on this please?

Thanks,

-Todd-

The center AF point is extra sensitive and you have the assist points as well. So I think shooting sports via the center AF point shouldn't be an issue at all.

I don't think it's a matter of the 5D MKII not being able to shoot sports, it's moreover whether it's the best tool for the job. (Obviously the winner would be the 1DMKIII)

The 1DMKIII is obviously the better of the two for sports, but the 5dMKII does a fine job shooting sports as well. If you are moving from the 40d to a 5dmkII you will improve the shoot speed as well as overall image quality. If your budget wont support the 1dMKIII then the logical choice would be the 5dMKII.

i think the 40d would be better for sports. a bigger target in the viewfinder is a big deal when shooting action.

when i first got the original 5d i sold my 20d but later bought another one because i could not go it alone with a FF camera.

today i have the 1d mark III and the 1ds mark III. i have used the 1ds for sports but the 1D is a faster and more responsive camera and gives me a bigger target to track.

If your not going to be shooting sports as a number one priority, then the 5D2 will work quite well. I tend to lean towards the 1D2 for shooting outdoor sports, the 5D2 for indoor work because of the high ISO performance.
