I purchased my Mac yesterday at the Apple store. I had called the tech school that I attend earlier in the day to ask about purchasing Adobe through them and she told me that I could go through the University that oversees our tech school. I have a University ID and am able to purchase education software through the University Bookstore at a discount/ education pricing. So when I'm at Apple, I find out I can also purchase my software there - and get an even better deal because I am purchasing a computer along with the software. So I decided to purchase it through the Apple store, which saved me $250 off the price that I could have gotten it at the University.... Didn't think much about it since the University told me I was eligible for the discount....

So I get home and I'm looking at the (unopened) software. It says that you have to submit a higher education photo ID, which I have through the University, but the ID has to have a date... mine does not have a date on it and they do not issue ID's with dats. If no date on it, you have to submit other proof that you attend the University. So I called my school (the tech school) and asked them if our information has the University info on it or just the tech info... it's just the tech info.

The way I understand this is that if I were to purchase it through the University for $250 more, they actually have a way to unlock it there.

So I think I'm out of luck at getting the software from the Apple store to unlock.

Does anyone here have a similar experience, or know of anything I might be able to do to get it to work, or should I just return it? Thank goodness, I didn't open it up, however the store is over an hour and a half away... and I hate thinking of having to return it... Since it is unopened, do you think I will be able to return it and get my money back?

If you already have the software you shouldn't have to worry about getting a) the discount and b) it to unlock. The software key should be inside the box. Generally you only have to provide proof for an education discount when you buy the software. So once you have it, there is nothing left to do.

I wish that were the case, however it says on it that you have to submit the proof via an onine form before obtaining the serial number to get it to work.

Contact Adobe and explain the situation to them to see what they really need then. When I bought LR from Academic Superstore I had to provide proof to the store. The software came in a regular box and had the key with it.

I also buy my software through the academic superstore and they have different ways to show proof of student/teacher/etc. Check out there web site and see if there prices are up to par with the apple store. Also see what forms of id will work for them and then call adobe. I had to show a check stub and a picture id. I am sure you could probally show a registration form or some other proof of enrollment. I don't think they are all that strict as far as proof goes. Then again what do I know!

When I buy software from Academic Superstore it finds my kids' scholastic eligibility through an online database. I have never had to submit and hard documentation.

I had to submit proof to purchase, and all I needed was a copy of my current schedule showing I was enrolled (my id has no dates either).

Adobe has a "student edition" education software for cs4 that is only eligable for purchase by higher education students. Its even cheaper than the regular education software but it does have to be activated at a special Adobe website using info from in the box and with their required documentation.

Remember, you cant use Educational software for profit.

You are basically only allowed the discounted versions for Educational purposes

So does this mean when I'm done with school, I will need to purchase the entire program or is it an upgrade fee?

Is there a way to upgrade from the Educational version should you decide to shoot for profit?

Does anyone have the exact phrasing for their "not for profit" statement?

My understanding is that the purchased upgrades (to CS5, or whatever) 'forget' about the education edition notation. Guess I'll find out for sure when CS5 comes out!

Depends on your location.
I'm fairly sure that the "non-profit" holds true for Europe, but *not* for the USA.
