In favor of XXD? Elaboration beyond yes/no is welcomed.

just a xxD, no, but a 5D and 40D, yes.

the 1 series is a great camera but far more than most of us need. I actually used mine for sequence work, so at times I "needed" (or at least used) every frame it could crank out. But I'm primarily a landscape/travel shooter and carrying around the bulk got very old very quick (not only the body, but the spare battery and charger?).

as it turns out the 5D was PERFECT for me. I picked up the 40D for sequences but it's not enough. Right now I'll rent when I NEED to do one, and I'm saving up for a 1Dii'N' as my backup when I can afford it, but honestly I'm in no rush, the 5Dii is doing everything I need right now.

so while it's not a 1D -> xxD transition, yeah, I dumped my 1 series and haven't regretted it for a second. Although 95% of the guys here will tell you you're crazy.

Yep, I sold my 1D classic in order to buy my 40D.

There were several reasons:
1. Battery life SUCKED on the 1D.
2. Weight
3. There are excellent EF-S lenses that I would have liked to try and wouldn't be able to on a 1D.
4. I don't shoot sports or anything that I 'needed' the AF system for.
5. Had to carry around several backup batteries.

Other than that, I don't have any other reasons. I hate getting rid of it and had I had the money to own both, I'd have kept the 1D too. I will eventually go back to a 1D series body but no time soon. Money doesn't grow on trees down here in the south:)

That wouldn't surprise me one bit. :D

Assuming I made the move at all, my "transition" would probably be from the 1D II to two more 30Ds with some spare change for a couple car payments. IQ is pretty much identical. I'd have to sell the 24-70 for the 17-55 IS though.

I bought the 1D II for sports. I don't do sports anymore. It's overkill for weddings from a technical standpoint but a joy to use. At the same time, the 30D is also beautiful in its relative simplicity.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread a bit, but.. those of you who bought a 1d mark II, (or other) to use for sports, how did you like it?
I'd like to buy a used mark II for rodeo this summer. Thanks

Well, I didn't use it for sports but if you can afford one, buy it. You won't be disappointed!

I sold off my 1D2 because I never used it over my 5D. It's not the XXD that you were looking for, but the reasons are pretty much the same.

-For what I shoot mostly, the AF of the XXD series is more than adequate. Though I will grant you, I also shoot some paid gigs of kids sports, and the center AF assist points on the 5D are a definite help in Servo.

-Size - I love the smaller form factor of the 5D

-Weight - When running around with 2 kids for personal use, the less weight, the better

-Ease of use - I could probably configure my 5D blindfolded from a reset. I just know where all the settings are, and don't need to worry about the need for both hands to change settings (yes, the 1D3 series improved on this, but the 5D for me is still much easier to use)

Name is Peter and here is my gear:

Speedlite 580ex II, 430ex - Gitzo GT-3541XLS w/ Arca B1

Alwaysmakes sense to change to the needs, 1dsmk2 is overkill for most things anywat and the models above even more so, except for af on the 1dmk2 anything from 20d and up will make for great images.

Woah, cdifoto posting a gear thread! What has the world come to.

I'm considering dumping my 1D3 because I could use the money. I love the camera, but the 5D is more than enough for me. I wouldn't go to a 1.6x crop though, just because I don't like the icky viewfinders and the crop factor. Full frame saves me from having to buy a lens wider than 24mm :p.

I agree about the simplicity. It's really quite a beautiful thing, and the small form factor is a plus.

You should get a 5D, man. Then the world would really be f-ed.

I agree.

Me too. Personally it's why I haven't gone to a 1 series. I don't have a defining need for it, and I appreciate the smaller size and simplicity of the 5D.

But any x0D body matched up with the 17-55 IS is going to be a nice, lightweight package for shooting weddings.

The world is already f-ed but the 5D sucks so I wouldn't go there. :D :p

Heh! My 1D3 has only been used a bit over the cooler months, some birding and macros and whatnot, with the 5D being my fave, but now that the weather is getting better it will go back to being my workhorse, and I'd regret it if I didn't have it.
