hy guys.

this past weekend I lent the camera to my cousin and this happened...
will it be very serious?

Those screens are removable on the 40D and 50D so my guess is that yours is also. That little tab I believe is the latch you use to replace it to it's correct seat. I also have a special tool that came with my replacement screen but I think it was mainly used to hold the screen while placing it in teh camera.

I can look for the instructions but I'm sure someone out here knows off the top of their head.

It looks to me as though the focusing screen has fallen out. It should be simple enough to put back, but after an accident like that, it's hard to know what else has parted company.

it just the focusing screen. the little carrier that dropped down just clicks/snaps into place. clean your focusing sceen, replace it back in there. raise it to the top and press lightly till it clicks into place. careful not to touch the mirror

Focus screens are extremely easy to scratch.. handle with care.

Maybe it's worth looking at this .pdf (external link)instruction sheet from KatzEyes. This is a 30D version but should give you some idea of what's involved.
