What precisely is your budget? Popular ultra wide angle lenses include the Canon 10-22, the Sigma 10-20, etc. etc.... just how much can you afford to spend?

I know a lot of the members here get the 10-22. It's not that expensive and is plenty wide for you.

I was going to say, I have the 17-40 for my 5DII and it's plenty wide, but not for the 1.6 crop cameras. The 10-22 is sharp, so you will love it!

You may want to consider the UWA Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 lens. Excellent lens, built-like-a-tank and the purchase price includes a designated hood.

Currently, the Tokina UWA 11-16mm f/2.8 lens is going for around $600.00. You can review info on this particular lens and others at the following two reputable companies: (www.bhphotovideo.com (external link)) and (www.adorama.com (external link)). Good luck!

The Tokina is all the rage to these kids nowadays. To hang with the popular kids, get one of those. (its a fantastic lens)

Canon 10-22 or Tamron 10-24 is the way to go ;)

Tamron 10-24 is not regarded as the sharpest out of the UWA bunch. Quality-wise, i've seen the most success stories from people with either the Canon 10-22, Tokina 11-16 or Sigma 10-20. Either will do, but it depends on your budget and what you want from a lens.

if you want to shoot inside in churches, dark streets, evening, pokergames etc, there's not much else than the 11-16. 10-22 is also razor sharp and has a great focal range. Sigma 10-20 is a lot cheaper than either...

If you've got the cash, the Canon is excellent. If you're on a budget, the Sigma gives up a little image quality, but is really a bargain at the price. The Tokina is a fine lens (it's actually on my wish list) but that 11-16 focal length gives up a lot of range to the Canon and Siggy, and at the ultra-wide end that's a lot more than it looks like on paper. The fixed aperture of 2.8 is great, but if you don't particularly need that fast of a lens... I have to say the Tok, attractive as it is, remains more of a special-purpose lens. You'll get more versatility and use out of the Canon or Sigma.

With your budget, the Sigma's probably the way to go.

Another reason to get the Tokina is compatability. It will work on a FF camera that you may purchase in the future. You would crop out what you don't want. The Canon limits you to only a crop sensor camera. Always look to how you might use your lens in the future, the Canon cannot be used on a 5d but the Tokina or the Sigma (I believe) work on a FF and at the 15-16mm angles does not even have black vignette.
I have the 11-16 2.8 and love it. The other big advantage is the extra stop. Helps in low light situations.

i use to shoot a lot of wide angle scenery pics...but due to the canon 10-22 not being wide enough...i tend to shot vertical panoramic shots with my 24-105mm...

Canon 5d with 24-105mm and a Canon 28-135mm which stays in the bag all the time. Canon 50mm F1.4 PRIME
Canon 400d with Canon 10-22mm F3.5-4.5 (wannabe L lens), 18-55 EL Cheapo lens
