OK,

I have a EFS 18-55 f3.5-5.6 and an EFS 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS both used on a 20D.

I bought the 20D secondhand without a lens so bought the 18-55 to get me going, the 55-250 was a present frommy wife so i could get some motorsport and bird pictures and was bought new.

However, since using the 55-250 i have noticed huge difference in image quality between the two - the 55-250 being much better.

When we go on city breaks i use the 18-55 on the 20D and my wife uses her Canon G7. The G7 always produces sharper pictures than the 18-55!

So i want to upgrade and have seen the following all secondhand and in my price range i.e. £150ish:

canon 17-85 EFS f4 - 5.6 IS USM
Tamron 17 - 50 f2.8
Sigma 17 - 70 f2.8 - 4.5
Tamron 28 - 75 f2.8

I would like to be able to overlap my 50-250 so not having to carry it around on city breaks

Which is going to give me the better upgrade in image quality????

Cheers

Nev

The new 18-55 IS is indeed much improved over the original, but I'll tell you right now that either of those Tamrons you have listed blow it out of the water, visually speaking. We just got the 28-75 for The Wife's 50D after much research, and the lens lives up to all the glowing reviews. It's a fine, fine piece of glass.

That said, 28mm isn't particularly wide on a crop body camera. We didn't need it to be wider, since we already have the excellent EF-S 10-22 ultrawide. For your purposes, the Tamron 17-50 2.8 will give you essentially the same range as your 18-55, only with much improved image quality and a wonderful fast 2.8 aperture, which will allow you more flexibility in low-light conditions. And the Tamron lenses are really bargain priced for the quality you get (at least, these two are).

However, if that's still too much out of your price range, the 18-55 IS can be had secondhand for less than $150.

+1 on the Tamron. My "go to" lens on my 50D!

+1 on Tamron 28-75m F/2.8 is a nice lens for walk around purpose. slight over lapped, but image quality will be much better than kit lens. IS does not really help.

My setup in my bag.
