I plan on going to Comic-Con in San Diego. Never been there before. Any recommendations on a lens?

My sig line is up to date with my kit. I usually keep my 17-40 on my 40D all the time and just use flash when necessary. Will this be ok for Comic-Con? What about telephoto end? Should I get an 85 or 135 prime? I take it the 70-200 f/4L might be too slow indoors.

70-200 would work with an ISO bump if needed.

If you can pop for the 135, get it.

It might be an idea to check with the venue to see if they have any restrictions on what kind of camera can be admitted.

I was actually looking at the 135 f/2L (which is out of stock at all the good vendors, too).

As far as Comic-Con, I'm pretty sure anything goes with still cameras.

The 135L is a superb lens.

But it will only shine if you have good control over your framing/composition.

At an informal, busy event like a comic-con, you might end up being frustrated when you try to frame something carefull only to find someone walks into your space...

Wide and tight might be a better alternative.

Well I guess the first question is, what will you be taking pictures of? People in costume? Panels? Events? All of the above? A go to anime expo every year and I find telephoto almost totally useless. Pete is right, too many people are moving around to make any use of telephoto. For Guest panels it is nice, but to get any kind of decent perspective you will need to be able to move around the room, something that may be restricted once the panel starts. My 17-50 is glued to my camera during cons because it gives me nice and wide to fairly tight if i need it. There is rarely any more than a few feet of room between you and your subject so wide is the way to go.

Does anyone know if they're restricting any type of flashes? I'd like to order some from BH before I go.

I live in San Diego and while I don't go to Comic-Con, I see the news coverage on it every year. The crowds at the Convention Center for the event are horrendous. If I were to attend Comic-Con, I would take one body and one lens, probably my 28-75 Tamron and nothing else. I'd go with the batteries (gripped) and media card in the camera and not carry any spares.
