All,

I just received (yesterday) a brand new 70-200 F2.8L from an authorized US dealer. I recieved a blank US warranty and everything is in order. The only thing is that the date code is W07. Is this date typical (ie: lens is 9 months old) age for a new lens sold?

I'm not really concered, just interested.

thanks

Really just depends how long they have had it in inventory. Smaller shops tend to have less turn over in comparison to the bigger shops like BH for example.

If the lens was built in 2008, it would have a date code of... UW####

If it was built in 2009, it would be UX####

Depends on where you bought it from. My 85L purchased new in Feb. 09 from a smaller shop came with a UV10xx date code. My 17-40L puchased new in March. 09 from Amazon came with a UX03xx date code.

On two separate occasions (2 years or so apart from each other), I purchased a 70-200 f/2.8 IS from B&H Photo, and both lenses were roughly 6 months old when I got them. I figure they must inventory a pretty large amount of them.

If I remember correctly, I think the "newest" lens I ever purchased was my 14L, which was about a month old according to the date code.

I would not worry. Warranty servicing goes by your invoice date not the lens date. After warranty, it doesn't matter.

I don't think there is any physical difference, so i wouldn't worry. Like jhom said, the warranty is by the date you bought it, not when it was made.
