We have a well-used 580EX that had stopped working after a shoot today. It worked flawlessly as a slave for several hours. Then, when I put a fresh set of batteries into the unit for a second shoot, it stopped firing all together.

I have tried several sets of batteries. The screen comes on and the Pilot light comes immediately on to red. I took note that I didn't hear that "powering up" sound that typically accompanies turning on the flash. Pressing the Pilot light to fire a test shot does nothing.

Help?

You've probably burned out the flash tube. Leave it somewhere cool for a few hours, put fresh batteries in, when you get the red light hit the test button. If the flash doesn't go off send it to Canon to have the flash tube replaced.

It is usually a one price repair for the 580EX which is about $125

Just to follow up on this.... local camera shop took it in and fixed it. Turned out to be the triggering circuit... $120 fixed and out the door. Looks like $89 of that was parts.
