Great shots Jeff. Did it sound like a grown up owl when it called?

Cool story and hopefully that little owl stayed out of the road! Glad that people stopped for it and it didn't get run over.

A few summers ago I found a just-fledged flicker in the middle of the road and I put it back in the woods. It kept hopping back out in the road and I kept putting it back further in the woods. Eventually it seemed to stay there, and then the next day I was really worried that I'd see a squished baby flicker in the road! Thankfully I didn't, so I assumed it was ok. No photos though!

Its a great feeling to be able to help out. Hopefully I will be able to spot it again this weekend and know for sure its ok. I almost felt guilty about snapping any photos but I had to document this almost unbelievable story. Thanks for looking and sharing...Jeff

Thanks. Its funny you mentioned that because it didn't sound anything like an owl when I heard the calls, it was more like a deformed screech of a red tail hawk. However from the screech's I was able to locate the little guy again and got around 75ft away and heard something calling back. Differently was not a typical who-who though? Is it like a distress call?

Nice story and pics, I hope the little fella wasn't too traumatised by it all. Well done for stopping and helping :)

They had something on the local news here in St. Louis, MO that this was the time of the year that owls leave the nest. It appear that baby owls are being found around St. Louis. They said the samething you did about getting the owl out of the area of danger and the parents would return.
