What shutter speed were you using?

Really like this one. Haven't seen a lot of southpaws on the mound. Very different perspective.

One of the best I've seen. One like this would be an accomplishment for me. Wow

Thank you. I don't really go out looking for the frozen ball at the games. I'm usually just taking action shots, etc.
If I think about it, I'll give it a go. High school season is a no go as all the games take place in the evening. I can't get a shutter speed high enough to freeze the ball and still show any kind of light at all.

I like the shot, and I really miss the travel ball days... This is the exact opposite of the cryptic thread intention. Oddly enough the secret handshake is that the ball must be sharp and everything else out of focus. My first submission was off the mark too - that was 3 seasons of college ball and 2 seasons of pro ball ago... Enjoy the journey, it goes by way quicker than I thought possible!

BTW here's a good example: https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?p=18729847

Really? I reversed the whole thing? LOL, fits my way of working.

It does go by fast, I can see it slipping by, trying to enjoy every second of it!

Thanks

Don't worry, everyone gets it wrong.... and usually complains about the "cryptic thread title". Honestly, it has become increasingly cryptic over the years as user accounts get deleted and their posts get erased, servers and services change and posts get deleted/lost, along with various hosting services changing. For instance, the current poster who has post 1 of this thread is not the thread starter as far as I remember. I also remember the 1st thread showing an example of it and a VERY detailed explanation, thus, if anyone who visited the thread with the wrong impression would "get it"... though, that really didn't happen either.

Other than that... once you know the intent, this thread is always entertaining.

In terms of actually capturing the picture. Originally, I thought the spray and pray method was the way to produce results and those with high FPS cameras had an advantage. Now, that is not my experience. Spray and pray doesn't really work when your FPS is 2.5 on average. Last time I attempted this (last summer), I would compose and focus pre-pitch, then single shot. Wouldn't get every one right, but in 2 or 3 batters worth of pitches, I got 3 or so frozen ball shots done. Not so hard once you get things figured out. Just have to learn length of time between when you start to depress the shutter to when the shutter is actually open.

Side note, I have gotten this shot for 4 or 5 pitchers and gave the pictures to the parents among other pictures of their kid (friends, not contracted or anything). Every time, they specifically comment on this picture. It's a different perspective that they never experience.
