Nope, no IS. It's the only current Canon Super-Tele that doesn't. Bit of a bugger, but well at f/5.6 it's a bright sunlight lens anyway, and for birding it'll likely be on a tripod as that involves a lot of sitting around pretending not to be a person anyway.

This would be interesting to observe in action, pretending to not be a person

Interesting like watching grass grow :P

Basically sitting quite still, as birds are very sensitive to movement.

Do you wear camouflage and sit in fold away chairs and all that? or just on the ground?

Oh, 400 prime? Somehow I was thinking 100-400, and thought, wtf the 100-400 has IS!

Generally just on the ground, but am considering the folded chair and camo net route, as some guys I know get awesome results that way.

When I got to use a mate's 600/4 (non-IS), I stood rather than sat, as the tripod was set to standing height and I didn't feel the need to change that. Managed to snap this willy wagtail.

Yeah prime :)

I've used the 100-400 on several occasions and found
a) I mostly shot at 400mm
b) it really wasn't as sharp as I wanted
c) the IS on that lens is fairly crappy and not that worth it

not a bad result!

did you not find standing for a lengthy amount of time quite frustrating?

I'm off as well. Got my assignment finished and I'm now looking forward to shooting the photos as I like the ideas that I've come up with for it. I'll post them in here as I get them done ;)

Ergh, I never understood the appeal.

Except, oh, anything. :P

I guess it's the same thing with film cameras. Although I used to dj which is why I have the turntables.

From a listening sense, I really think you appreciate it more when you put on a record. Because you have to flip it / change records when tracks end you actually make the decision to listen. Unlike when people just have the radio going all day long, or a bunch of tracks through an mp3 all day long.

As for quality, well, I think that comes down to personal preference.

cheers, Nic

Very good thread Nic - straightforward, not pretentious and asked good questions. Now I can steal the replies and go into competition hehehe
