Cheers, mate. Most of my experience (some time back) is based on an AE, where you could get away with a bit more. I'm still sussing out the limitations of digital (dynamic range, mostly).
OTOH, I'm on hols. I'm hoping to take my three-legged-monster, my light box and my lappy and hope to try my hand at HDR. It sounds like that may be more my style.
I could be wrong, but it can't hurt to try.

Even when I was shooting with my 1N (SFS again) I was metering off the players on the pitch. I didn't have the screen to deal with, but having the players exposed properly is the most important part.
HDR wont really work with that much action going on. You're gonna end up with ghosting from the players. A light box wont do too much either really, your best bet would be a mono pod and a lower shutter speed if you need more light.
Maybe you should try a faster lens though? (Sorry, not sure what you're shooting with).
