How do you like it? I wanted to get that game, but Evan picked a NERF shooter game where you fire NERF darts at targets.

Eli wants that game as well, my SIL got two for her kids by mistake so she is saving it to give Eli for Christmas!!

Thanks all, thought it was time to update you with his 5 month photos.

ERIC I love seeing shots of dogs doing what dogs love to do.

ZANE no encouragement needed at all for him to get in the water. He is definitely not a broke lab. :p

anyone...I need some advice.

First, I'd like to know if this is normal:

Kona will do something deliberately (bad behavior)...he'll steal a kitchen towel or something he shouldn't. Then he'll run (to get us to chase him) and if we catch him he'll lunge and try to bite.

I've yelled. I have smacked him and he just dodges and tries to bite. I've caught him by the collar and he still jumps and tries to bite. Again I've smacked him but then he acts like a cornered beast and tries to bite.

I need a new way to deal with this. I hate it.

I'm not bad tempered but when he does this whole biting thing I freely admit to wanting to take him to the shelter and wash my hands of dogs all together.

I'm tired of it.

and yes, he's been exercised. More than enough today. He was just irritated that Dan locked him out of the office for trying to get into stuff.

Becky your Bax is SOOOOOO handsome!! I can't wait for Aiden to meet him!

Me either. They have a dog and Aiden pretty much just pushes them out of his way if needed. The big thing will be watching Bax when Aiden's toys are out. He was barking at the rubber ducks his morning, knowing they aren't his to play/chew.

Lisa have you looked at shock collars? Some dogs respond so well to those.

You need to put a collar on him that tightens when pulled, keep a very short lead hooked to it. When he does any behavior not to your liking pull UP on the lead so the collar tightens around his neck. Leave the lead on him all the time when indoors.

Make an appropriate noise as you pull, not "no" but shhhh or psssst so that he associates the noise with the correction. You can also follow the YANK on the lead with a touch to his neck with your other hand, if he goes to bite pull (yank) UP on the lead again and finish your behavior mod by touching his neck.

You mioght have to do this for 2-3 weeks, you might not, but he will eventually get it.

First, I'd like to know if this is normal:

Yes, it is a normal behavior, unacceptable, but still a behavior that needs to be dealt with.

Generally, what I do in similar situations is stand tall and firmly put Bax into a sit command. It often takes several times of saying his name and the command, I don't yell, but I'm very firm. Eventually he submits, at least partially. Then I cup his lower jaw in my hand and give the command out (this is what I use instead of drop). I also use the related hand signal. Again this can take several attempts but I don't let him "win". Once he gives it to me, I tell him, knowing he doesn't understand, No, this isn't your toy. I put it down and if he tries to get it again I snatch the object and firmly say NO. Once he stops trying to snatch, I praise him, and then give him one of his toys and play a bit, like fetching his tennis ball.

What most of this does, is get him out of thinking this is a game and fun time, eventually it should teach what is acceptable and what isn't.

EDIT: What I mean by normal behavior, is to act out when jilted. The biting is a bad behavior he has adopted, he should be able to broken of it, however; being that he is still young.

It's an okay game for awhile, but it gets meh after awhile. Once you get to a certain level it gets near impossible to beat the level to proceed.

Lisa, its normal. Sounds like Kona has more than average energy and is finding a way to burn it off. I don't think I've ever mentioned this before, but I used to have dogs that would bite on my hand when they were playing with me...snaps really, but never hard enough to break the skin. That was thier way to play. If it started to hurt me I always just tapped the muzzle for them to stop. Kona will grow out of it soon...and when Kassidy comes around, he'll have a playmate. Just like others mentioned before, its all because he is a teen right now.

Maybe he needs to be exorcised instead. ;)

Yes, it's normal.. he is behaving like a kid who will do anything to get attention.

I agree with this... it sounds like something that would be worth a try.

I got mine today too. My catalog, I mean. Not my rash. That's not due for another week or so.
