My daughters graduation is coming up. It's going to be at night, in the school gym. Bright gym lights. Will my 100-400 work okay for that? or is there a better lens in my list? I won't be able to get all that close to the stage, which is why I was thinking the 100-400. it depends on how bright it is. I'd say you'll have to use a fairly high ISO to get good shutter speeds with that lens, but noisy pics are better than no pics. sevillafox wrote in post #7886200 Well folks. I think I had to use 3200 ISO on some shots. Robert | Gear |

I just know I've been in bright gym's before but depending on the lights the camera won't think they are so bright. That's all I know, sorry.

I won't be able to get all that close to the stage, which is why I was thinking the 100-400. My first response would be maybe for standing still shots. Gyms are notoriously dark and difficult to get action shots. I usually am at high ISO and f/2.8 to get enough shutter speed for horses and stuff. You don't need a fast shutter for a handshake and walk across the stage so it may cut it. Can you go do a test exposure Do whats right HERE

After that I will switch to a diff. lens for before/after grad. pics. 3Turner wrote in post #7886223 It worked for me when I went to my sisters graduation. I can post up some examples if you'd like. I won't be able to get all that close to the stage, which is why I was thinking the 100-400. I dunno Paula. It will definitely have the reach but the speed may make it difficult for you to get a sharp photo (you've mentioned before that you've had problems keeping the shutter speed up). I might go with (maybe rent?) an 85 1.8 prime and crop or a 70-200 (either the F4IS which works well in low light because of the IS and isn't heavy) or the 70-200 2.8IS. .. It's Permie's world, we just live in it! ~CDS

If you find that there isn't enough light for your 1-4, throw the 50 on there, open her up wide, and shoot away. Then just crop the pictures when you get home. That might be your only hope depending on the light. Wouldn't the 100macro be better then the 50? No? Paula
