Wouldn't the 100macro be better then the 50? No?

I wouldn't. It's slow focusing, and you might miss the shot because of that.
And your 50 is twice as fast.

I dunno Paula. It will definitely have the reach but the speed may make it difficult for you to get a sharp photo (you've mentioned before that you've had problems keeping the shutter speed up). I might go with (maybe rent?) an 85 1.8 prime and crop or a 70-200 (either the F4IS which works well in low light because of the IS and isn't heavy) or the 70-200 2.8IS.

Yes to the bold! That is what I'm worried about. :( All my spare pennies are going to finance the oregon get together... so can't rent a lens. Maybe I will just use the 50 or 100macro and crop.

Sorry, I disagree. The older version is slow. The newer version is quite fast. At least as fast as the 50. (unless you have the older version, Paula)

Thank you all for the help on the lens issue. I swear my next lens is the 70-200. may just have to sell my blasted 100-400 to get one

I'm trying to find a shot at 100mm to the stage so you can get an idea of the distance.
