WOW!! *sigh* I looooove the flowers. I wish I could get out there..... PIc Bug, I Love, Love, Love the pink poppy shot.. :) You did an awesome job with all of them. I need to sell my 85mm lens so I can buy Jay's 100 mm macro... he won't need it anymore since he has the fipping 500mm bad boy! haha..

@Jay.. too funny! Wish I could take credit for "glowing"... but I do know the secret..... ;)

Nice sports work Doug... always a fan of your work.. and Jay.. what can we say about your amazing aircraft? As for Mr. Mike.... come on man.. share some of those macro shots...! No fair holding out on us!!

Hatch. I'll take #2!! I really love the soft bokeh effects you are getting in these. Do your knees hurt? :). I'd like to see what it looks like out there in the morning light.

Many thanks :) The cactus stuck to my leg yesterday was a little more painful.:D I think it would be nice...but... cool enough the poppies wouldn't be open. Still a pretty place to see right now.

Ouch! It sure is hard sometimes to get out of the zone to tend to watching your step for stray cholla, backing up in to prickly pears, and watching for snakes too. :p

I ran into another serious photographer who was not really familiar with the area, who came out on Tuesday to photograph the poppies......the day it was really overcast, and they were all closed up. He thought he missed their peek till he came out the next day in the warm sun and there they were with their litle poppy faces shining in the sun!

Here is my effort on the desert flower, pales in comparison to the previous work. From Estrella Mtn Park.

Boy, oh boy I am so, so tired of you guys gaying up the place with all your flowers, next thing you will want to add some potpourri and drapery (jk) ;);)

I took some pictures in a field . . .

a field of dreams!!

How about something besides FLOWERS!

it's all making my eyes itch, nose run and killing me with allergies.

Great shot Doug. Is the exif accurate? I was curious on the lens focal length.

Thanks..

Kenny..

Thanks Kenny. No the exif goes crazy when I put them in my boarder mostly shot with a Canon 100 mm - 400 mm L IS f4.5 -5.6 not the best sports lens, but I must work with what I have for now.

The dugout shots are from my 70 mm - 200 mm f2.8 L IS.

Is that what you were looking for?

Exactly..!! Thanks... I have been seriously considering the 100-400 for football and sports type stuff. If your not entirely satisfied with the 100-400, what would you get? Also, what are the negatives with the 100-400 for sports? The low light handling I'm sure, but what else aside?

Thanks..

The first lens to get is the 70 mm -200 mm L IS f2.8 spend the extra for the f2.8 that is your "swiss army knife" of lens, and the most used lens for indoor basketball, nighttime football, just about any indoor sports where light is an issue.

After that the 1-4 is the only low cost alternative, granted it is a dust pump (but so what, just keep things clean and clean your sensor), some don't like the push-pull zoom, but it's OK as far as zooms go, you will never be able to use it indoors or at night with low light.

It's good in the daytime for zoos, motorsports or any daytime sports, but as soon as the sun starts to go down I have to put it away.

What to get instead? Well the next lens to consider is a big jump in price, the 300 f2.8 is $4k or the 400 f2.8 comes in a whopping $8k.

The 300 f4 is nice but still not usable for nighttime. You can put a 1.4 converter on either the 300 mm f4 or the 70 mm - 200 mm with reasonable results so that gives you options.

There are many factors to consider, like cost, what you shoot most, size, and weight.

Next daytime meetup we are at, I can let you shoot with it some and see if you like it.

Also on a crop body/APS-C sensor it works out to like 640 mm or something like that.

PicBug, Frank, Doug - great shots! You guys are killing me with all of the wildflower shots. Just gorgeous work. Doug, I gotta get out and try my hand at baseball. Love the colors and action.

I have an issue I want to run by my esteemed colleagues.

A young racer sent me a message on Facebook that he was excited to see the pictures of himself from Saturday. After I accepted his friend request on FB, I noticed his profile image had the watermark from Trackday.net, a fellow motorsports photographer who I have a lot of respect for and who I have purchased images from.

Today I sent him this message (privately) and I was wondering what your take is on the issue. Should I just accept that this sort of thing is going to happen and let it go? Or should I be watchful and defend my work from improper use?

Here's the message I sent:

Hey Ryan - I'm a little concerned that you have several pictures from Trackday.net on Facebook. The watermark on them means you probably didn't actually buy the photos from Mike and he didn't give you permission to use them. If you had, you would have the photos without watermarks.

We photographers make huge investments of time and money to be able to produce those shots for you. Of course you have the option to purchase or not, but to take the proofs that we put up for our potential customers and use them isn't cool. Technically it is copyright infringement and Mike could make you (or Facebook) take them down.

I am not trying to be a jerk here, but it doesn't make any sense for me to post the pictures I have of you of you are going to do the same thing with my images. If you're genuinely interested in potentially purchasing photos from me, I am happy to upload them to my site.

Yikes Dean! I've never sold my photos, but I think the way you are thinking of handling the young racer situation is very good. The email is kind but informative, and I belive you are correct with the FB copyright thing. When you download photos to use on there, if I recall correclty, you have to click that you have ownership, rights, or permissions to those photos you download and post there on FB, or something like that. So he did a facebook nono anyways, and also one against the photographer. We have to kindly watch out for each other. Good luck whatever you decide to do.
