Would Is really be useful for macro shots?

If you gain say 1 stop... it will help with the shutter speed... and this would make the difference between a blurry shot and a sharp image. I haven't read anything on the new Canon 100mm macro with IS making a huge difference. I think you only gain a stop...maybe a little less when the lens is at 1:1. Could be wrong. IS/OS or not ... the Sigma 150mm macro is a great lens.

Yeah and I thought if you were to use it as a regular lens IS?OS would be good to have too. :)

So how does the "Hybrid IS" in the new 100mm work then? What's it do differently?

I think the difference is it doesn't have Mode 1 or Mode 2 just on or off.

No more all direction stabilization and vert. or horiz. only modes.

If I understand it correctly that is the difference.

Steve C...chime in...

Canon claims 4 stops.... but... I swear I read on FM in the macro forum @ 1:1 people only gained 1 if that.... not 100% sure.

another
http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/826099 (external link)

Now reads as a 2 stop gain at 1:1 ?

For me... when I had the 100mm macro classic... no issues.... no need for IS.... but... that's me. I don't think it would help with the Sigma 180mm macro I have... I shoot it hand-held and with a monopod.... but... I have to have the shutter speeds up or it shows shake with the longer focal length.

hmmmm

I'd venture the points would go to the 2.8..

I'm really struggling with what my next lens purchase should be. I really would like a 24-70, 50mm 1.4 and 18-85.. And I really NEED to get a fisheye..

I've sold off most my lenses and now have.
EF-S 10-22
Tammy 17-50 (non vc)
70-200 mkii
Nifty 50...
1.4X
2.0X
I really don't know. Everything's a priority

I think this area is where the biggest dilemma is between crop and FF. I think my choices would be easier with FF..

I hate to quote myself,,,, But I was thinking,,,, aside from NEEDING the Fisheye, would I be better served with a light meter to increase the quality of my OCF experiences? ?

If you intend to do Full Manual OCF, IMO, most definately...

You can shoot and chimp but if/when time is money, a meter will make your work much easier!

How is it that I just discovered this thread? I'm reading it here at work.

Anyway, is this just random AZ folk chatter, or do you folks actually shoot together?

A bunch of random chatter with the occasional random "Meetup", followed by a bunch of random chatter, rinse and repeat,

Welcome to the thread!

Aha! Thanks for the welcome :) I've been on POTN for a few years, but only started coming here regularly relatively recently. I'm in NW Phoenix. I shoot most anything except humans (except when forced into it by some relative).

Azboricura, I note that you're one of the few other people I've run into with a Sigma 50-150. I have the original (not the version II) and love it for indoor sports. I know that lots of folks had trouble with that lens, but mine works great.
