since i am on budget in buying a wireless flash trigger, i saw an alternative to pocket wizards which is the flash wave. has anyone used this? how is its performance in terms of firing and misses?

I've not used the Flashwaves but there are other alternatives to PWs. Have you looked at Cybersyncs or Skyports? I use the Cybersyncs and find them to be reliable and affordable.

I ordered a set for my 430ex (version 1). I've heard there were problems with the 430ex and flashwaves in the beginning, but they've been fixed in the newer models. I will let you guys know my experience with them next week.

I'm currently living in Korea so I paid about $130 for the set. My fingers are crossed!

i paid $40 for some cheap ebay radio flash triggers.... i don't see why spending the extra $80 makes it a better trigger. sure reliability and consistency is key, but so far i haven't had any misfires.

my 2 cents.

I didn't go the ebay route because I didn't want to deal with the possibility of returning them and the wait time. If I have a problem with these, I can send them back. Also the frequency is different over here, although I've heard these seem to work in the U.S. as well.

I went the ebay route (301P's) on the chance that they might save me many £'s ... and so far so good.

Very reliable and I got a transmitter and 3 remote receivers for total cost of £45 shipped from Hong Kong. The equivalent in PWs or Skyports would probably cost close to 10x that .... I figured it was worth giving them ago ... so a far ... so good.

i searched ebay triggers and they seem a lot. from your experiences, which brand of those cheap ones should I be looking at?

as for cybersyncs, im not sure if they would be way cheaper when shipped to Canada due to shipping and duties fees when they crossed the border.

i do have the flashwaves 2 and thinking of returning them as i find them pricey here (now that you mentioned that it is only $130USD in Korea). i wonder how much is the shipping costs from there to Canada...

I just got them a few days ago. The build quality is very good, and they are tiny. They sync with my Rebel 450D just fine up to 1/200, which is my camera's max sync speed. (Sometimes I can get away with 1/250th too, but not 1/300+). I'm not really sure about the range, I haven't tested them. I have a 430EX I and it always sync'ed 1/200 and below, BUT I did experience some random flashes (false positives). I switched to another channel (channel 2) and they seemed to work better.

A few considerations though: I am in Korea. The radio signal of mine (the newer ones) is 433mtz, which is probably not ideal for the USA. Please read this info about frequencies if you're not familiar:
http://www.pocketwizard.com/inspirat...ogy/frequency/ (external link)

I think they are a decent product here in Korea, but given the different frequencies of different markets I can understand that others may experience more problems (or they may not, I don't know).

Since I am a flash newbie, I bought these without realizing the limitations of most RF triggers. I need HSS capabilities to shoot the kind of stuff that I want to do, and these along with most RF setups don't work with HSS. I'm going to try to return these and buy a 580exII and use the Canon IR system, since it's one of the cheapest way to have off camera full ETTL + HSS capabilities.

i got the decision to go wired instead of wireless so i returned the flashwaves that i got. nothing wrong with it however, my sigma 530 DG Super fires a lot in one shot. seems weird but it will bust my sigma pretty sooner if i stuck with it. my 430 EX2 is fine with it although it has auto off enabled that is why i need to turn on it every so often.

I asked a friend in Manila to get it for me for P7500, that's about US150 a set. Extra receivers cost US$90.
