50D & Sandisk Extreme III GB Question

Why is it when I use a 8GB CF Extreme III card in my 50d the image counter on my LCD screen maxs out at 999?

Will this also happen with a Extreme IV Card?

On my XSi when I use a 8gb SDHC the image counter on the screen will display 1600+ images.

Note the above applies when only shooting large jpg's

The top screen of the 50D maxes out at 999 but if you use the screen on the back of the camera it will show you the exact number.

It's in the manual

Simply card space far outgrew the three digit counter, and canon decided that it wasn't really worth it to make more spaces. That and people aren't smart enough to read hex (which would give you 4k values rather than 1k)

Keep in mind it is still accurate once you are lower than 999. In other words, once you shoot enough pictures it will start counting correctly so it is still useful.

It doesn't matter since it's accurate below 1,000 (as dalto said). But, actually the rear LCD screen doesn't go above 999 either.

Seems stupid to offer the number value above 999 on the XSi. But not on the 50D. It's really no big deal, I just wondered.

If you hit the info button, down at the bottom of the back LCD it shows the correct number of shots left.

With my 8GB Lexar UDMA card it states:

[Possible shots] Freespace
[1183] 7.45GB

That's when I have Large Fine Jpeg selected.

Top LCD is cramped up as it is, it's not worth it to add more digits, since it doesn't really matter if you have 3k or 1k left on a card. Hell, until you get down to 150 or so it doesn't really matter.

It gives the exact number on the back screen if you hit Info.

Yup, if you set up your Info button for Camera Settings it will. I have mine set up for Shooting Functions which IMHO is much better choice.
