I have a 20D and am considering getting a release to make it a little easier with my dogs.

I am curious as to which is preferred and is one better than the other as a quality product (I understand there are differences as far as using for a particular situation). Also, I don't know too much technical about the releases and would like to know about focusing when using a release.

Thanks in advance,

Sarah

There is not a good wireless release that works for the 20D that is really economical (the Canon one is around $400!). There are however plenty of wired ones that work very well.

The wired releases have a button that is just like the shutter release on the camera that you can half down to focus and then push all the way down to take the picture. Some releases also have a slide that can hold the shutter button all the way down for doing long exposures (so you dont have to sit and hold the button down).

I HIGHLY recommend the YN aftermarket shutter releases. They are much cheaper than the Canon official one (Canon RS-80N3 $50 vs. $4.80 for the YN) and really work just as well. Some of the other aftermarket ones are crap, the YN one is quite nice and you cant beat it for $4.80 shipped! If anything try it and see if you like it! You will not damage your camera with any of the switches as all they do is short pins on the camera. Only thing you could possibly do I guess is bend the pins on the camera if you tried to jam the connector in but you could do that with the Canon one as well.

Some of the Canon accessories are just stupidly priced, their remote switches are one of these items. It is about a 3 cent switch inside a plastic case with some wires, nothing more, nothing less. The canon might have a slightly better feel, but is it $45 more? I definitely think not.

Here is a link to the YN one at dealextreme which is used by many around here and other places. They are in Hong Kong so shipping can take a little while, but for the price who can complain!

Believe it or not, the cheap Chinese remotes on eBay are GREAT. I have a couple of them, and several friends are using them now as well. We all love them. They are radio frequency (RF), so they work up to 100 meters away (300 feet). You don't have to have the remote in line of sight with the camera's IR receiver. Depress the button halfway to focus. Can set them to work with the timer. Can use the bulb setting.... great stuff.

They're only about $20 as well. The only disadvantage is the long shipping time from China. It takes 2-3 weeks to get them in. There are several sellers on eBay, and there are several models that appear to be pretty much the same function-wise, just different cosmetically.

Here's one example: RF remote for 20D (external link)

I have the Phottix C8 that I use with my 20D and MkIIN. Works great and can be had for about $25 shipped out of Hong Kong. It works as both a wired and wireless remote.

Thanks for the info and advice. I will check them out on e-bay.

I was just worried about the focusing and how that was achieved.

Thanks for all the input. I was looking at the one on POTN but wanted to know a little more about the product itself before buying.

Anyone here using the wireless (radio frequency) remote sold in the POTN shop ? Curious to know how this is performing. Looking to use with my 50D. I bought a Phottix wireless for my XTi some time ago,and it is a little unpredictable. Haven't used it in quite a while.

Does anyone know which, if any, of the previously mentioned wireless releases are compatible with the Canon 1D Mark IV? Thanks.

As long as the release has the N3 connector, it will work on that.
