Mastamarek, even the online picture is really too small to "get" what you've done -- ImageShack does have ways of linking larger photos, is there any way you could post larger sizes of both the Before and After shots?

Winters, very nice job of bringing some "pop" out of that gloomy-looking building!

And, hey, could you post your Raw adjustments, please:)? See the thread intro!

And, thanks for a nice contribution!

Good evening! It's been a while since I've been in this thread, but I had one I thought might be interesting to share. I'd posted a photo in another thread, "a daub of lily," and it received a couple interesting comments. I thought I'd share what I did. I used my Rebel XSi to take the photo and edited it in Apple Aperture. In all it was a four step process. Here's the original thread:

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=882189

Before:

After:

Content warning: NOT AN IMAGE

!. Take the photo. It was Monday May 31, a sunny hot day in Virginia, 15 miles west of DC. I was at Meadowlark Botanical Garden and walked all the way around a small pond that had water lilies in it. I wanted to get a good photo of one. I couldn't get very close to any, so the one in the before photo was probably the best of the group. It was sharp and not overexposed. I wouldn't normally mention this step except that I worked a lot to get this shot.

2. Crop to the opposite aspect ratio. While the composition was okay, the water lily was too small. Given its sharpness, I decided to crop it and go from portrait to landscape.

3. I converted to B&W. I used a green filter (100%). I tried many filters. Most of them had generally the same effect, except that blue brightened the water a lot as the sky was reflected in it. The green filter made the image consistently dark and dreary.

4. I removed B&W from the lily. I used a small "brush" and had it set to detect borders. I carefully erased the B&W from the lily. I zoomed to do this, though the tool was actually quite good about respecting borders.

Three other minor changes were made to the image. I sharpened it, raising the intensity from 0.5 to 1.0. Highlights were raised from 0 to 20.48. Levels (RGB) were changed to 0.00, 0.58 and 0.95 from 0.0, 0.50, and 1.00.

It's amazing what these tools can do today. Hope folks enjoy this!

The before:

The After:

Settings:
IMAGE: http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z229/dwarrenr/Editting/Dog_adjt2.jpg

Not much was done on the normal settings, did an auto adjustment and just a tad of sharpening. As you can see from the before shot, the landscape rocks were over exposed and very flat. So most adjustments was done with the graduated filter (two of them actually). The first was placed below the stone wall down to the bottom edge. I brought down the exposure and upped the contrast a bit. The second graduated filter was added from the bottom of the window down to the lower 1/3rd of so of the image. Again just brought down the exposure. I think (at least on my non-calibrated monitor) I over did it with saturation.

Any CC would be very appreciated on what else I can do.

Thanks!

+1, ditto. Aged brick is always difficult for me to find the right sharpness, as old brick does not have many (if any) sharp edges to them.

You did not ask for any C&C...but here it comes. ;-)a The only thing I would do is level the image (3 degrees CW or so), unless that is the look you are going after. My eye likes to see everything level.

@winters

Nice picture but use the angle tool to level the building..i would also take a little red out as the bricks look a bit over sat to me.

Its been a while since i've put anything in here, so here' goe's another try...
Yes, its not in "proper" focus, and you can't read the words on the bike, but that's what I was going for... "dramatic effect" so to speak...
Maybe next time I'll take a step ladder with me to get a more overhead view of the bike and down the track :)

I've been using tone mapping (not HDR) and then either fake HDR script in Gimp or just other stuff in Gimp to spiff it up.

I also tried using a lens correction filter here but it obviously didn't work too well, making the house look curved in. If anyone would like to help with that I'd appreciate it.

I went a little overboard but wanted to try out a bunch of stuff including FX Color Foundry - WOW and Make Wonderful. These are great because they're put on layers and I can slide the opacity. I also like Gimp's exposure blend for the same reason. In Photomatix's Tone Mapping you can't adjust each exposure as far as I know.

Comments welcome.

Jeffrey, thanks for the contribution, you got nice results! Please read the introductory post for this thread, though -- external editors (even if they are plug-ins) are outside the scope of this thread!
