Mastamarek, even the online picture is really too small to "get" what you've done -- ImageShack does have ways of linking larger photos, is there any way you could post larger sizes of both the Before and After shots?

mathogre Goldmember More info | Good evening! It's been a while since I've been in this thread, but I had one I thought might be interesting to share. I'd posted a photo in another thread, "a daub of lily," and it received a couple interesting comments. I thought I'd share what I did. I used my Rebel XSi to take the photo and edited it in Apple Aperture. In all it was a four step process. Here's the original thread:
After:
!. Take the photo. It was Monday May 31, a sunny hot day in Virginia, 15 miles west of DC. I was at Meadowlark Botanical Garden and walked all the way around a small pond that had water lilies in it. I wanted to get a good photo of one. I couldn't get very close to any, so the one in the before photo was probably the best of the group. It was sharp and not overexposed. I wouldn't normally mention this step except that I worked a lot to get this shot. 2. Crop to the opposite aspect ratio. While the composition was okay, the water lily was too small. Given its sharpness, I decided to crop it and go from portrait to landscape. 3. I converted to B&W. I used a green filter (100%). I tried many filters. Most of them had generally the same effect, except that blue brightened the water a lot as the sky was reflected in it. The green filter made the image consistently dark and dreary. 4. I removed B&W from the lily. I used a small "brush" and had it set to detect borders. I carefully erased the B&W from the lily. I zoomed to do this, though the tool was actually quite good about respecting borders. Three other minor changes were made to the image. I sharpened it, raising the intensity from 0.5 to 1.0. Highlights were raised from 0 to 20.48. Levels (RGB) were changed to 0.00, 0.58 and 0.95 from 0.0, 0.50, and 1.00. It's amazing what these tools can do today. Hope folks enjoy this! Graham

As you can see from the before shot, the landscape rocks were over exposed and very flat. So most adjustments was done with the graduated filter (two of them actually). The first was placed below the stone wall down to the bottom edge. I brought down the exposure and upped the contrast a bit. The second graduated filter was added from the bottom of the window down to the lower 1/3rd of so of the image. Again just brought down the exposure. I think (at least on my non-calibrated monitor) I over did it with saturation. Any CC would be very appreciated on what else I can do. Thanks! D. Warren Robison

Aged brick is always difficult for me to find the right sharpness, as old brick does not have many (if any) sharp edges to them. D. Warren Robison

XSi with grip, Sigma 18-55 f/3.5-5.6, Sigma 28-70 f/2.8, Canon 100 f/2.8 macro, old but great Canon 300 f/4 L, 430 EX II, Quantaray 900W, broken tripods, White Lightnings, many accessories--former pro film, quit, now back into it for fun
