I knew right away that the sun wasn't gonna initially stand out like I wanted it to. I also knew that Fulton's was gonna be very much in shadows. One of the first things I did was to add Fill Light to this. This made the details in the shadowed areas come out some. And increasing the Black levels added some contrast to those areas. To bring out that warm/golden light in the final image, I decreased the Brightness and Increased the Vibrancy. To make the sun seem like it's radiating more of the sky, an increase to the Highlights was made. As far as Luminance levels are concerned, I decreased most of them to deepen the associated colors. And the Red was increased there to give the Fulton's sign a little more brightness. There is also some slight vignette added to the edges of the pic.

Final...........

Scott, that's a cool conversion! Thanks for this contribution, and for your great description of your "digital darkroom" process!

Hey guys here is what I have done, nothing special but I thought I would contribute

Raw

Converted in LR3

The Changes I made: what I did not include here is that I also changed the Camera Calibration to "Camera Faithful" and I did a lot of work with the retouching and skin smoothing brushes. I also had to do some work with the desaturation brush in a few spots that could not take the amount of saturation that I put in the photo as a whole. Later, I also adjusted the white balance 200 degrees under auto to 4350 and the tint ended up at -3.

That's a very cool retouching job! The fact that you were able to pull that off in Lightroom should be eye-opening to a lot of people who think of those capabilities as only available in "Photoshop"!

Thanks very much for this contribution!

Thank You for your reply. Yes I am very happy with Lightroom 3. I quit using aperture 3 now and CS5 has even gotten a little less use for the minor skin smoothing and retouching work.they really did a wonderful job with it. Lightroom could now probably be somebody's only Software if they were could get away with doing light work like in my example that photo and 50 others from that shoot never has to leave Lightroom for anything. It really cuts the time down. I also really like how it interfaces with CS5 it is very smooth for when you do need to. I could not get that out of any other programs.

Just install Lightroom 3 (sorry, I'm always bit slower adopting 'new' software).
Can't use DPP any more :)

This is the final photo:

would anyone be interested in doing some raw processing to fix some extreme lighting on 2 of my wedding shots?

I've had a go but there are people on here far more skilled than me. I can upload the RAW's and am happy to have people display their before/after here.

Here's a suggestion:

Take a Raw image and give it your best shot in your Raw processor and post your Befor and After image with the processing you have done.

Then, upload your Raw file to YouSendIt.com and give your email address as the recipient and they will send you an email notification with a link to the file. Post that link to this thread and we can jump in and help.

But first, get in here with your own contribution!

I reduced the overall exposure, upped recovery ad then selectively increased exposure on the shaded areas and reduced on the sunlit areas using brushes. The right side of my face(on left in photo) seems to be completely blown out though... I can't seem to rescue any more of it myself.
