Not a super duper fantastic conversion, but I thought I'd post this because of two really incredible tools that make for learning an awful lot about your raw data.

This shoot was for a project requiring an architectural photograph of the church facade, shot in really tough lighting conditions on a narrow city street. The shoot was made even more interesting because I had the camera mounted on a monopod stuck into an 8 foot long aluminum tube so I could elevate my camera above the street to decrease the perspective distortion - the camera was about 14 feet above the ground. I shot at highish ISO and high shutter speed to make sure the camera swaying back an forth atop the pole did not introduce blur. This is a throw-away shot while I was testing the system, but I like the juxtaposition of the old church facade and the newer apartment building with the nice tree and sky providing the color. The image was part of an exposure sequence I shot in case I needed HDR data. I used Raw Photo Processor to do the conversion and Raw Digger to inspect the raw data.

Because RPP only makes two sizes of raw conversions, full res and half res, I resized to 1024 in PS. RPP has no NR, but does all processing in full 32bit float math. I chose "TC4" film emulation (Technicolor System4 dye Transfer (Technicolor 3Strip)) to bring out the colors and lift the shadow tones. This raw converter takes some getting use to but it is super powerful and gives excellent results.

Did I mention both applications are free? Make a donation to unlock camera profiling and batch processing - it is worth it.

Raw histogram - this image was purposely underexposed - plenty of headroom left, even in the green channel.

Here is a conversion of the same scene, but shot at +2 compared to the above exposure, and converted using ACR 7's whacktastic highlight recovery. It is pretty impressive, although the cyan in the overexposed areas of the sky is a little off-putting. Still, it can save an image, even with 2 clipped raw channels.

Kirk, it looks like ACR did a great job of "taming" that sky with the +2 exposure, and the greens don't look crazy -- thanks for posting that!

Max, nice that you could pull so much detail out of those building!

Thanks for posting these guys!!

The composition and image are nothing spectacular, but considering I almost fell off a 10ft soft dirt ledge while trying to get in position quickly, it's actually quite acceptable for me. ;)

Anyways, I had previously tried tweaking this in LR3 but wasn't happy with the results. I recently installed LR4 and I was very impressed. Not sure if the controls are simply more intuitive, or if the program itself is that much better.

Very nice example of what you can do with Raw!

Tony [In his gentle but firm voice]: "kouasupra - great conversion - please remember to post your settings so we can all learn how you managed to make this conversion!"

Well, I'm not a DPP "expert", since I use Lightroom for my "serious" Raw processing, but I know that DPP does have various capabilities with the curves in both the Raw and RGB tabs, so if you're curious, I know the Users' Guide has info and also there are turorials, I'm just not sure where specifically, but here is a thread dedicated to DPP:

And here's a Canon Web site with tutorials:
