Thank you, Ziffle/Mark!
I cannot comment too much, as I switched to LR3 after upgrading to a new camera so that brings up a lot of new variables. However, I did compare the noise reduction of the LR3beta and I think it is a big improvement. At the moment it only has chroma noise reduction and not luminance, so it isn't as strong as other programs but it has a much nicer look to the noise (more grainy and less splotchy) with much less color noise.
Here's a sample of a moderate crop from an ISO3200 1Ds3 photo through LR3beta http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/7072/mg0030.jpg (external link)

nice......

i have processed 2 wedding w/ LR3.
Love the new engine, sharpening is better and i use vignetting now.
I have played w/ noise reduction .... but still use noiseware for any hardcore work.
waiting to see how much functionality they will add to final version of print and slide show.

Later,
_Mark

It's been awhile since I last contributed to this thread. Recently I've just been outputting straight RAW to JPEG using DPP or LR so no real processing. This is a pic from a wedding I shot a few weeks back.

And finally the settings I used:

Great conversions this morning. I need to get some new ones going and put them up.

I wanted to post some of my efforts at the more advanced and less used aspects of my RAW converter of choice, LightRoom - learning the capabilities of these tools has lessened my dependence on pixel-editing software like Photoshop. I'm going to go over some adjustment brush use, and hopefully it'll inspire a more artful and creative individual to explore and further their use in our little classroom!

This isn't a great photo, but it serves the purpose. First, the Before/After - assume the regular WB and exposure corrections, I'm not going to go in to them here.

IMAGE: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2628/4153047730_4d7f198fa3_b.jpg

I'm going concentrate on the eyes of my lil girl - first, I wanted to enhance some of the existing color in her eyes, so I used the "Color" brush to select a green that was close and started painting - you can see the brush overlay, color selection and brush settings here -

IMAGE: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2611/4152285613_e762fc2641_o.jpg

Next, I had to even out the brightness of the left and right eyes. I didn't want it completely uniform, 'cause one side of her face is more brightly lit, but I wanted it a little more uniform. You can see those adjustments here -

IMAGE: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2683/4152285667_614432d2f0_o.jpg

Last, I applied my saved custom preset that I often use on eyes - gives 'em a little more pop, you just have to be careful that you don't over-do it, something that I'm still learning - adjustments here -

IMAGE: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2485/4153047810_89e84020cd_o.jpg

Oh, one other thing that I did - there was a catch-light in her right eye that wasn't in her left eye - I used the "Spot Healing Brush" to clone that catch-light, not the brush's intended use, but I'll take it!

Final image -

IMAGE: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2717/4151442577_a5bfa94b1e_o.jpg

Oh, side note - "Auto Mask" is clicked in all of these photos, but was not enabled in any of these adjustments - for most of this kind of work, "Auto Mask" gets in the way.

Hey Bill, cool to bring out those eyes! Especially the all-red-eye ones:)!!

The cat's chet has the same puplish tint that the shirt in the background does -- is there a colored light in the background?

Thanks for making another contribution to our "classroom"!

LOL - for N00bs not in the know, the red bits are the Adjustment Brush overlays that show you where your changes are taking affect - you can toggle the overlay on/off with the "o" key.

OK. I just purchased LR...can you point me to some reading so that I can get started. The 1st thing I need to do is move my catalog from PSE7 to LR. So I need some basic info to get started.

Edit: I see the sticky but the threads are dated 2007 and seemed to have experienced lots of problems. Are there any updated tutorials?

Thanks

Al

Hey Al, welcome!

First, if you google "lightroom tutorial" you get this:

http://www.google.com …utf8&q=lightroom+tutorial (external link)

Just walk down the list and pick and choose -- a couple good places to begin are on the Adobe site and a place called Lightroomkillertips -- http://www.lightroomkillertips.com/ (external link) hosted by Scott Kelby with great tutorials.

I'm also one to recommend reading matter, and there are several good books covering Lightroom. Some of the most populare are ones written by Kelby and Martin Evening:

A valued member of this forum, Victoria Bampton, runs a site that is rich in resources for Lightroom users. Here is her profile, with specific links in her sig:

And, of course, you are in this thread, which means you have right here at your fingertips some great examples posted by a lot of users!

Enjoy your new acquisition!

Thanks Tony. I see I will have to ease into it. Just a few questions before Il begin my journey. Is tagging photos the same as in PSE7? Will it transfer all the tags I have along with the photos from my catalog in PSE7? From some readings in the sticky, it seems the early version did not stack photos...does this version stack photos?

Ok I am off to do my readings.

Yes, you can stack photos, and there are some other great tools (check out Virtual Copies and using the History Panel, for example). Oh, and by the way, the Help contents are well done. Until you wade into a good thorough book, I'd be sure to wade into Help -- it gives a good overview and step-by-step instructions of all the "stuff".

I don't know how well Elements organizing stuff will transfer over to LR. I haven't used Elements since before I started with LR -- back at Elements 4, and I just don't have recall of how things moved over. Check your folders, and if there is an XMP file associated with your images, you can import the folder and then read the XMP files either automatically (can slow the import down) or by the Read Metadata From File command.

If there is no XMP file, Elements may (or may not) ahve the ability to save keywords and maybe Raw edit data -- you'll have to check that out. Maybe some Elements users here who also have Lightroom will have the answer to that.
