Yes, you can stack photos, and there are some other great tools (check out Virtual Functions and using the History Panel, for example). Oh, and by the way, the Help contents are well done. Until you wade into a good thorough book, I'd be sure to wade into Help -- it gives a good overview and step-by-step instructions of all the "stuff".

I don't know how well Elements organizing stuff will transfer over to LR. I haven't used Elements since before I started with LR -- back at Elements 4, and I just don't have recall of how things moved over. Check your folders, and if there is an XMP file associated with your images, you can import the folder and then read the XMP files either automatically (can slow the import down) or by the Read Metadata From File command.

If there is no XMP file, Elements may (or may not) ahve the ability to save keywords and maybe Raw edit data -- you'll have to check that out. Maybe some Elements users here who also have Lightroom will have the answer to that.

I just realized that in my post above from yesterday I cited "Virtual Functions" as a Lightroom feature. To be honest, I don't even know what a "virtual function" would be (outside of object-oriented programming)...so I have edited my statement to read "Virtual Copies", which now reflects something comprehensible:)!

Heh! <Urp>

I used to do programming for a living, so I guess it's no surprise that a term from the "old days" would pop up -- it just is funny to see that when talking about photography software!

I hope I'm adding this with in the original "instructions"....

I'll admit I only read the first page worth of post and skipped the other 98, but it got me to start looking at some of my images that I thought were trash

I've only been using a digital camera (20D) for about 3 weeks or so, and this is the first time i've tried DPP...

But after seeing what can be done SO EASILY, even by someone as inexperienced as me, I'm totally convinced! And will be shooting RAW from here on out !!!

both screenshots below include the original JPG image in the screen shot to see what was done with the RAW in DPP. I really like the outcome of each.

Thanks for this thread and showing a "newb" just how easy it is bw!

also a quick question, in my camera's setting's what's the difference, or which one should I be using.....

sRGB or ADOBE RGB, my computer shows both so does it really matter?

Went from washed out to the edge of blown out (but not ACTUALLY blown out) b/w conversion. Added a slight vignette at the end. -.20 exposure brush shown.

Kawboy, greetings and welcome to this thread! And, thanks for sharing your contributions!

In the first shot, it looks like you were aiming for a bit of a "gloomy" look, correct? In other words the smaller, lighter one is the "Before" image in these two shots? it's nice that we can creatively alter our "vision" of a shot isn't it!

I do hope you enjoy yourself here -- and keep posting!

Scott, always nice to have your contributions -- did you bring out some detail in the darks? Maybe it is from the enlarged image, but the guy in the couple seems to have more detail. Anyway, nice conversion, those highlights can be real tough -- a lot of time I spend more time massaging highlights than on the whole rest of a photo!

Oh and Kawboy, do take some time to at least skim through a good number of pages here -- there has been a lot of variety displayed here from a lot of individual contributors, and the "how to" screen shots and details can give some very valuable help to understand and then to develop your own approach.

I wasn't really looking for a "gloomy" look, just trying to get some color in there so they didn't look so whashed out, they needed some depth..... actually, a lot of my photos do :o Yes, the smaller image is "before".

I got so excited seeing these 2 images come back to life after thinking that i was going to trash them...

I will deffinately be reading more closely through these last 100 pages!

Thanks Tony. I didn't apply any local enhancements to him, that was just a by-product of the color mixing in the b/w conversion.

Now that I'm getting a really solid handle on brushes, I'm loving LR even more than ever. My Photoshop time has been dramatically reduced, which is great.

I hear you Scott -- at this point LR/ACR have a "magic touch" for Raw processing -- let's hope the competition catches up soon so all of us photogs have the best tools to work with.
