I did a studio session yesterday with a fellow photographer and artist in town. I'm a photo student and this was done for a studio headshot assignment. All shot with 5D & magic drainpipe.

I'm open to all forms of C&C, but if being critical, be constructive ;)

I love the first, the half-light is what does it for me. Very dramatic as mentioned and works well with the overall attitude of his expression.

I'm a newbie so don't kill me PLEEEEASE.
Amazing shot, i love it.
... but (there is always a "but" ) I think that, in the last one, you have to use it a little bit lower llight, because you lost some information in the hand... this is a little thing of three amazing photo.

Normally I do not care for the punch in the chin pose, his hand competes for attention with his face. But I think it works OK. The second and third are better but I think cropped a little too tight, for a portrait. Overall much better than we usually see for an older mans portrait.

No3 for me, with a lovely diagonal flow to the comp which makes it appealing.
with 1&2, perhaps a smidgen more light on the left side?

Concentrate on equipment and you'll take technically good photographs. Concentrate on seeing the light's magic colours and your images will stir the soul. - Jack Dykinga

not too much done really, slightly lowered saturation and bumped contrast.. it's more about lighting & exposure on these shots.

Thanks! I didn't try moving the light in any to make it a little bit brighter. I was afraid to make that side too bright as I wanted it to be the shadow side. Probably could have thrown in a reflector or bounce card now that you mention that.

Thanks to the rest for the positive feedback.

The lighting and everything looks great to me. I'm kind of new and that style of lighting is one of my favorites sooo I may be a little partial.

Technically perfect. Like 2 the best. The poses in 1 and 3 seem a little cliche to me though. Also, personally the only thing i dont like is that you have a color temp sway between the right and left sides of the face in 1 and 2 (looks maybe like a door or window was open). Right side is very warm light while right wide is white.

the cool lighting was deliberate. It's been something I've wanted to try for a little while after seeing it being used in tv/film recently. Thanks for the feedback on the posing, I'm new to that aspect.
