Though I do every now and then do a yearly archive to DVD for backup. But its usually not that much data.

Probably forever. DVDs take long enough and they are much faster than blu-ray burners right now.

Imagine if it took to copy/backup 500gb in the same time it takes to burn a 4.3gb DVD. Now imagine that the disk is longer lasting and yet only 15-20% more in cost then DVD's............... <-- Just dreaming
