Welcome to the forum!

There are a number of threads here that discuss various conversion lenses and their qualities. Here's a recent one (it starts out on a different subject):
https://photography-on-the.net ….php?t=63192&page=1&pp=20
But also searching for "tele" "wide converter" etc. on the G-series forum will generate a ton of good info.
Many of those will point to:
http://kazutoku.maxs.jp/G1andG2/report1_eng3.htm (external link)
but there's also good comparisons (fewer lenses) at:
http://www.lensmateonline.com/G3tel...converters.html (external link)

Yes, you'll need an adapter tube to mount any lens/filter. For the G2, I'd suggest going to lensmateonline, since theirs are aluminum, and the Canon adapter for the G2 is plastic. Lensmate also has excellent customer service.

Good links.

Also, take a look at this one.

The most interesting part is Scott's post about Olympus selling surplus converters in damaged packagings for very good prices on ebay.

Best regards,
Andy

If you're lazy, honestly I'd go for the Canon lens and the Canon adapter tube--it just works, and you don't have to do any research to see what size adapter you need etc.
If you want something less expensive, or higher quality, there isn't a simple answer.

OK, say quality because that is what I want. There's the CANON TC-DC58 TELE-CONVERTER witch is 1.5x. Then theres the other lens of company names I never heard of that you find on E-bay. "Kenko" Kenko KUT-300Hi 3x professional telephoto lens. You would think 3x is better that 1.5x. There's "OPTEKA" 2x Telephoto Lens.

I know that a crap lens can cause ghosting, blur... ect

No problem, if you're too lazy to read 4 threads that have been pointed out to you by other users
(who took the time to look up these threads and read them cursory if the information you need is contained)

... just go for the OPTEKA lens! Maybe also look for CRYSTAL OPTICS or MERKURY OPTICS.

They are so great that there is only praise for them in those threads.
You really don't have to read those other threads.

Always happy to help.

Best regards,
Andy

Andy,
Thanks for making me grin!

CiderSpy,
Andy's post made me laugh, so I won't get too cranky here: we can't tell you which lens is best any more than we could tell you what car/house/dog is best. There is no best--they all have different strengths and weaknesses. It's a matter of choosing the compromise that fits you and your wallet best. I'll repeat myself though: if you're not interested enough in photography to do that (and as you can probably glean from Andy's post, we're not interested in doing it for you), just buy the stock Canon gear. That's why they make it--it's an easy choice for the average consumer who just wants it to work.

You guy's are all a little too cranky... I do enjoy photography, I give may art away to family for gifts. I was just looking for somone to say, The (XRT-3200) is a wicked choise for a lens, you'll be glad you bought it.

Ciderspy,

normally, we are not that cranky
It's just that we find it hard to believe that somebody who wants to spend something like 200$ on an upgrade for his camera would not appreciate the possibility to educate him/herself as thoroughly as possible rather than just take the first opinion voiced.

If you read the threads, you will realize that
- the Canon teleconverters are very good quality (for a price)
- The Olympus teleconverters are also very good quality (for a maybe slightly cheaper price ... but you can get these at *very good* prices at the ebay seller mentioned in the tread I pointed out)
- The Kenko KNT-20 (LD20T) is also very good quality at an affordable price
- The Kenko KUT 300 has not been tested by anybody yet ... it might be good, but it might not be. Still, it's twice the magnification, so I would be a bit wary
- Vignetting can always be an issue with teleconverters, so pay attention that the rear thread size is not too small (there are 58 mm, 52 mm, 43 mm and 27 mm filters, the 27 mm filters might give you problems here)
- stay away from eBay offers of Opteka, Crystal optics and Merkury optics.

Hope that helps

Best regards,
Andy

I'd like to think we're a pretty friendly lot in general. However, we see this same question on a nearly weekly basis, and rather than answer it each time in depth, it seems much more efficient to point folks to the threads where the question has already been answered in depth, with contributions by owners of many of the different lenses.

Sounds like we need a sticky conversion lens FAQ?

Andy's already covered the basics, so I'll just mention my own lens decision: after doing the research I did end up buying the Canon lens, however, I have a G6, and the DC58N (which is a 1.75x designed for the G3-G6 series) is obviously different than the 1.5x DC58 for the G2, so my reasoning (more zoom range without vignetting at the wide end) may not apply to the G2 version. I did purchase my adapter from Lensmateonline--seemed like the best price/performance, plus they had good filter prices, and I wanted an HMC polarizer at the same time :)

Andy and DBump, you pointed out great threads. Thanks for taking the time to point it out to the one who asked, who as far as I can tell didn't even say thanks. May I add that the Raynox lenses are also of high quality and can give the Canons and Olympuses a run for their money.

Cider, welcome to the forum. You'll find that the people here at the G-Series are indeed a friendly bunch.

Again, not an easy answer here. There is a thread Where to post my photos that should point out all possible sites on the net where you can post your photos with advantages, disadvantages, costs, MB limit etc...
I have to admit that I have not read it recently, as I am happy with www.photo.net (external link), although for non-paying members the MB limit is not that high. There are surely better options in the thread mentioned.

If the photos are small enough (I think the limit is 100 kb, which should be totally sufficient for an 800x500 picture in decent JPEG quality), you can attach them to your post. The advantage of this option is that even if you don't host the picture any longer on your gallery, it is still visible here on the forum.

If you want to show your photos on the forum, you can either do it the G-series subforum, but I would advise you to post them in the 'sharing photos' subforum, because there also other people will look at them regularly.

Best regards,
Andy
