I'm hoping for some help figuring out what I need. I have a 5D Mark II and a 580EX flash that I don't use much but am trying to learn. I'd like to move the flash off camera and not sure what I exactly I need. I'm guessing a bracket and a cord to start with, any suggestions, information, links to point me in the right direction will be greatly appreciated.

TIA

Hali

If you want to use the flash in manual just grab a pc cord and your ready to go. Or if you wish to use ETTL you will need an off camera cord or you can also look at radio triggers or the canon st-e2 infrared system. How much do you want to spend will sway your decision also.

Ah, thanks Mark. I do want to use ETTL and for a start hoping to use it on a bracket or hand held (Most preferably on a bracket) I guess I'm also wondering which cords I need for the 5D MII, the ones on the Canon site are for everything BUT it seems. I hate to say money is no object, but I want to make sure I use what I get so I don't want to go overboard at the start since currently flash and I don't play well

Hali, the least expensive way to keep ETTL and get your flash out of the hotshoe is with this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …_Camera_Shoe.html#reviews (external link)
It will work on your 5DmkII and 580EXII.
It's only 2 ft. long so you are limited on how far away you can place the flash from your camera but if you are looking brackets then 2ft. is more than enough.
There are many threads on brackets here. I personally haven't used one. I tend to use on camera flash and bounce the flash off walls/ceilings or take it completely off camera and put it on a stand/umbrella, softbox, etc.
BTW, very nice gallery...especially the landscapes. You are probably having a blast with the full frame for those types of shots!

A better value than the Canon OC-E3 cord would be one of the 3 offered by Lon at Flashzebra: http://flashzebra.com …rds/ettlcords/index.shtml (external link). For bracket use the 3ft coiled cord is the best solution & if you want to move further off-camera he offers 16ft & 24 ft non-coiled cables.

Thanks everyone for the info, I'm going to get one from Flashzebra when it gets back in stock.
