Canons and Nikons have their own distinct sounds. Canon is a sharp, "typical" SLR sound, whereas Nikons are more of a clatter :P

So - which camera (or even just which brand) sounds better to you?

My fave so far is the 400d / 1Ds II. I didn't really like the sound of my 10d.

It's all a matter of taste and I have used a D300 and D3 and I like the shutter sound from each. I found that my 5D2 was a bit of a loud clunk compared to the Nikon, but it does sound closer to my Hasselblad, which sounds superb!

5d sounds nice, as does the 1dmkiii (on machinegun mode, it's such a beautiful sound even if it is a bit loud).

basically everything sounds better than the snap of a rebel

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

I always liked Rolleiflex but also copal shutters in view camera lenses sound like a nice clock work.

The shutter is not the bit I generally dislike but the mirror slap. Just compare a 5DmkII in live view compared to TTL. But that may be a nit pick I guess.

i love the sound of my MKiii over the sound of my older 40D. the 40D was just a bit clunkier, while the MKiii sounds so nice and smooth.

Agreed, I've always felt that my 5D sounds like mice are in there manually lifting and closing its fat, heavy mirror, but I love the results. ;)

Yeah, I'm not just saying this because I use Nikons, but I really don't like the way most Canons sound. It reminds me of a bunch of tin cans clunking together or something. Nikon engineers a more "substantial" noise that is just more satisfying to my ears. That's the one thing I really can't stand about my friend's 40D--when I press the shutter it doesn't sound even nearly as good as my D40! And don't get me started on the sound of a Rebel.

Call me strange, but I kind of dig the robotic sound of the rebel series bodies. other than that I like the sound of nikons Dxxx and Dx bodies.

Switched to the "dark side" but I like these boards.

I agree about the robitic sound - the 400d did sound great :)

Of course the pictures matter more - the sounds are just a nice side-effect.
