I have the 100-400mm and have not really been happy with it when hand holding. (It's great on a Mono pod) The reason was I didn't like the push/pull and couldn't seem to find the right tension for it.
I was in this part of the Forum and came across a thread in which one member said, that when used this lens he turned the tripod collar to the top of the lens barrel. The difference this makes is fantastic it's so much easier to hold and to zoom in and out.
Not now sure which thread it was or who made the comment but Thank You very much for the tip, you've now made me a very happy 100-400mm owner.
Thanks again :) :)

would it be useful to suggest taking the collar off altogether & saving some weight as well?

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Only if you don't plan on using a monopod or tripod.

I shoot mostly hand held, just about the first thing I do is take off the collar and put it in the box on any long lens, not sure if it really makes much of a difference but my brain thinks it does:D

I use it on a Mono pod when taking Rugby shots as it get a wee bit heavy after 2 or 3 games, but its so easy just to turn the mount up to the top and get it out of the way, plus it only takes seconds. As you gather I'm very pleased with the tip from?

if its the same as the 300 f4, you lossen the nut on the collar, and slide it off the back of the lens, the lens has to be off the body.

Loosen the nut, rotate it around, theres a red dot on the tripod collar that matches the red dot on the lens, line them up, and pull it

It bayonets on..sorta...

:D

I think that could have been me. I usually have my tripod collar facing upward and I seem to remember posting about it to someone complaining about the discomfort. It makes a handy carry-handle that way around as well... :D

Yes Pete it more than likely was you as in the post I did also read about using it as a carry-handle.
Again thanks a million it really is a much nicer lens to hold now, cant believe how simple things like that can make such a huge difference. :) :)
