I was curious., too, what a $70 lens can do. This is what i got. Not bad i guess, for a 50mm f1.8.

f8, 1/100s, ISO 100.

Well.....yes. It's about a 50 year old Scientific Edmunds 6" refractor. Viewing through it looks A LOT better than taking pictures through it. I'm getting a little discouraged. At least I can say I have a "white lens". Now for the red ring around it....

I know the lens can probably do better but in the hands of an amature what can you expect.

some of mine are a little blurry and i was thinking of
sort of bracketing my focus.

set it to MF and move the focus ring in as small increments as i can get it and see if one of them turn out..hmm

Ok this was taken with a sigma 50-500 with the moon low in the sky. the plane just flew in front of it as I was setting up.

It might just be your exposure. Have you tried taking a set at different apertures/shutter speeds? I would also try adjusting the focus slightly to either side of what you consider to be ideal to see what happens. Definitely worth persisting for a clear shot of Jupiter IMHO.

Not that I am trying to compete with 'Dante's thread', but can any of you with the 70-300DO and 1.4 x TC try a shot? Oh, by the way, where are we in the lunar cycle anyway? I'd really like to see how that combo works.

watermarkphotography, that pict with the plane, you can sing "fly me to the moon....! :D

And I *really* love that morning shot, solinger!!

Btw, anyone know if it's possible to put on a converter on the Canon 80-200/2.8 L or is it too old and ruddy for that? I want to photograph the moon, but I can't afford a 500 mm lens, or more. :)

I'm thinking the same as Foxbat is,it looks overexposed mostly.Try some much higher shutter speeds .
it's also showing some latteral colour fringing (if i've remembered the correct term...) That is correctable in photoshop to a certain extent
