...A lens hood? I know the good points - reduced flare & glare, protection from hitting the front element directly, but is there any situation when is better not to use one? Apart from the obvious of course, as in when the size of it/it being there is an issue, and storing the lens.

Only thing I can think of is when you're using the built-in flash, when the hood can sometimes cast shadows. But I'd rather attach a proper flash than remove the hood.

Hmm yea that's one. I ask this question out of curiosity because I think it's become second nature for me to always attach my lens hoods and carry them around.

At sporting events, such as football ('soccer'), you rarely see lens hoods on long white teles. I'm assuming it's a courtesy/cramped space thing.

Same with photo pits near the dugouts at baseball games. Especially playoff games where there is far more national and international press than during the dog days of the regular season.

When using a lens with a very close focusing ability, the hood can cast shadows on or even touch the subject.

Just for balance here - have a hood on at all times. Yes, when using filters, flash and when you are too close to a lot of other long lenses are exceptions. But, hoods are great protection in many ways. Use them.
