Of course they can't change the red. They don't know how much red you need. You could have just chosen a different colour profile.

Funny how this had zero to do with your hardware. Even more odd that at 6000+ plus posts you've never heard of colour management of monitor calibration...

Honestly, you need to make sure that even with the new computer you get that you do this - calibrate and setup proper colour management that is.

The diagnostic tests offered three primary colors:
Red
Blue
Yellow

However the red was more orange and brown than red...And which ever way it was adjusted, it still had tints of brown and orange... The DELL Tech manager said that the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 card was already at it's limits and could not be adjusted any further.

My monitors on my two current Dell desktops are just fine and did not ever need calibration... For years, I've been printing professional results processed on my desk top computer and printed in a Pro lab, without ever having to question the *reds*...

I also have been reading about Spider software for a couple of years now, and so far find no need for it...

Needless to say, I've been using computers since 1979, and am comfortable with my present systems...

My inability (per Dell: not available) to access any color adjustments on this Studio 17 (1737) Laptop is very disappointing.

The sales team was well aware of my need for a good photography system
and I still ended up with the basic: Video Card
256MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650...and unfortunately it didn't "cut the mustard".

I'm not going to try and explain any further. Since you've been using computers since 1979...

You can adjust the colour. You just don't want to hear how. ICC profiles are manipulated in software. There are no "dials" on the hardware for adjustment like an old 4:30 tube TV.

Sigh.

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional

At no time did Dell offer any software solutions to the problem... Instead, they had me reinstall the drivers... that made no difference... Dell's technical support had control of my computer for several hours ... and eventually decided the orange and browns in the primary red color couldn't be adjusted.

you can adjust the RGB output via the nVidia controls in the Advanced panel in the display control panel, but you knew that already right?

Over the course of two days, I gave Dell technical support all the time they wanted to make any necessary adjustments...

Because this was a totally brand new laptop, right out of the box, I refrained from making any adjustments without the full consent of Dell's technical team...

Several technical support reps and mgr., had a try at addressing the problem of the base red color being mottled...

The computer was returned to Dell two days ago... Enough said.

Now, regarding my Smug Mug photo web pages, Bobster... Perhaps I should reword my copyright, cause my image hits have recently dropped by more than ten thousand per month.
