It's more than half decent.

Canon 40D; Canon 70-200 mm f/2.8L IS, 17-55mm f/2.8 IS, 85 mm f/1.8; 580EX II; Sigma EF-530 DG Super; CyberSyncs

Half decent? It's about 99% if not 100% decent. Many people complain that the build is not as good as Canon, but I have had EF-500 DG SUPER for about five years now and it's still going strong as my Canon 580EX, I don't see any difference. So go for it.

Yes. It has an ETTL/ETTL II support, so no problem.. But just make sure you get the
SIGMA EF-530 DG SUPER so you can use it later as a wireless flash.
Do not get the SIGMA EF-530 DG ST, if you want to use wireless setup in future.

Half decent is an understatement. It's at least two-thirds decent. It doesn't get a full decent from me because it's built like ramen noodles taste.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

I have one, works good for me. I'm fairly new to photography but it lights things. That's the point isn't it? It's not as fancy as some but it's suiting my needs.

I have the Tamron 28-75 2.8 and my EF-530 SUPER doesn't set the zoom according to the focal length, leaving some vignetting.
Other then that great flash!

Are you using it on Canon 50D? If so, you need to send it to Sigma for the firmware to be updated. There is a known problem with Sigma 500/530 ETTL with certain serial numbers; when the Canon 50D was released.. it's fine on Canon 40D though.

I found the Sigma menu system a torture, I was unable to get ratios to work properly when using two flashes in ETTL master / slave, and finally the unit pretty much stopped working properly in any mode. It seemed to develop some gremlin.

So I was never satisfied with it's performance, your mileage may vary.
