A minor hint for your trip: go to your local electronics store (better than Radio Shack if possible) and buy the best-quality electrical tape you can get. It should cost less than $5 for a roll. Then tape your European adapter onto the American plug so you can't accidentally lose it. I once left my adapter in a hotel socket when I was in a hurry, and it was a big pain to replace it. The reason for buying quality tape is that the cheap stuff slips, gets gooey, and doesn't have good stretch. I brought good stuff with me, and it has lasted 9 months on several plugs without problems.
BTW, I'm going to be in Italy May 5-15. If we're gonna overlap and wind up in the same city, it might be fun to try to connect for a beer. E-mail me at geoff@cs.hmc.edu

Oh, yeah: my standard European travel advice. Go to a toy store and get a $1 keychain compass. It'll save endless hassle when you come out of a subway and can't make sense of the map. Learned it the hard way.
