photozone recently started doing full frame reviews on lenses mounted on the 5dmk2
i was interested in the 85/1.8 combo, since i own both this lens and body and use it frequently for portraits
in their review,
http://www.photozone.de …19-canon_85_18_5d?start=1![]()
they state that "Lateral chromatic aberrations (color shadows at harsh contrast transitions) are basically a non-issue - this is a very rare characteristic."
i'm not sure if i don't have the terminology related to chromatic abberation down, but in my experience, my 85/1.8 has exhibited purple fringing in high contrast areas. i would post an example but i am currently at work and don't have access to my images. one example i recall was on a girl's dress that was white with black stripes. another example i remember was shooting the strings on a violin (silver on a black fingerboard). both of these times, i had been shooting wide open.
i noticed that they stated "We've already reported the problem before but the EF 85mm f/1.8 USM is somewhat prone to purple fringing at extreme contrast transitions. The issue is primarily limited to f/1.8 so you can work around it in critical scenes."
is purple fringing from lateral chromatic abberation or longitudinal chromatic abberation? i'm just wondering because they had a separate section for purple fringing, when their description of lateral CA as "color shadows at harsh contrast transitions" seems to be similar to "purple fringing at extreme contrast transitions"
thanks in advance
