I was very excited when I saw this guy(girl?). It was the first time I have ever seen a Kingfisher in person. I didn't even know they were around where I live. It's not the best shot, compared to some of the Kingfisher shots I have seen here, but I'm happy to have one at all. These guys are really noisy, and quite skittish. Very interesting birds.

If anyone knows exactly what kind of kingfisher this is please let me know.

I'm sure you do. I found a distribution map which shows that the Belted Kingfisher is a year-round resident of North America. Their call is un-mistake-able and very loud. It's what caught my attention. Look in woody places with a stream or something nearby. They are only found near water since their diet is primarily fish, and crustaceans.

Yep, it's a male Belted Kingfisher. Nice catch of a bird that normally is very, very skittish. This is what the female looks like...

COngrats!

I remember a few weeks ago I posted a picture of a bird that I had shot earlier that day for ID-ing it. I didn't know what is was until they informed me it was a Kingfisher, and I got unexpected compliments for the rare catch :) It was funny :)

Nice job and congrats. I've yet to get a shot of these guys that I'm willing to let anyone else see. :(

Great catch Rick, congrats. They're shy and smart. With a little planning you can stake out his favorite fishing perches under a piece of camo fabric and get within 20 feet. Lot's of fun to photo.

Harv, you been holding out? How'd I miss that one, very nice shot of the little lady.

Nice!

We have a pond in our yard that is ruled by a belted kingfisher. cool bird. Maybe one day it'll let me close enough to take a decent pic, lol.

Thanks everyone! Harvey_G that is an excellent shot. I hope I can get something like that someday. Artyman, I will be purchasing a Bigmos sometime in the next couple months. It took me a long time to decide between it and the 100-400L. I think I have finally made up my mind, Gabebalazs played a little part in my decision with his shots.
