Ok,

so here it goes...which 2 fast primes (<= 1.8) would you own?

criteria:

budget: $700-800
current gear: 450D, 17-55 f/2.8 & 70-200 f/4

I would love to have something to use while sitting at a dinner table or in a bar, and something with something with reach

im thinking 2 of these, sigma 30mm f/1.4; canon 50mm f/1.4, canon 85mm f/1.8;
but your own suggestions are welcomed.

I know my sig shows different gear, including the nifty, but I just got my lenses above in the mail, so im going to get rid of most of these lenses, and also, I do not plan on going full frame any time soon. I feel i like the features I get out of my XSI, and if I ever upgrade, it will be to the 60D if it ever gets created

If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving is not for you!!
7D; 17-55mm f/2.8; 100-400L; 85mm f/1.8; 50mm f/1.8; 30mm f/1.4; 430ex II;

30mm and 85mm.

That is, Sigma 30 1.4 (get a good focusing copy) and the Canon 85 1.8

i would def go 85 1.8, 50 1.4 and something a little wider than 30mm avoid sigma unless you dont mind having to send it back once or twice for calibration or other issues.

+1

or you could replace the 30 with the EF 28 1.8

+1 for the Sigma 30mm. It is a fantastic lens as far as IQ, once it is calibrated (if needed, or buy used and get a good one from the start, lol). My only gripe with it was that its MFD was a bit too much (about 3 feet), and I kept wanting to get very close to a subject.

With that vote, I'd also go for the 85mm f/1.8 to give enough separation, reasonable cost, and a great performer, so say the masses on this forum. :)

Sigma 20/1.8 and 50mm, or Sigma 30/1.4 and Canon 85/1.8.

There also isn't much point in ruling out f/2 lenses...1/3 of a stop will rarely make or break a shot.

there's not much else in the way of wider fast primes, esp given the stated budget.

the 30 f/1.4 is a great lens when it works properly. i bought a used copy and really enjoyed using it.

I'd go 28mm f1.8 and 100mm f2.

In your price range, there's nothing wide enough for a full table shot. Longer is easy, 50 or 85 both do that acceptably well.

My vote and also in my gear bag: Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and Canon 85.. f/1.8

Most will talk bad about Sigma but I have never had any issues with any of mine. Maybe I'm just lucky like that...

30/1.4 and 85/1.8 definitely.
Put together tokina 11-16/2.8 and you'll have a dream team. :)

i dont' see why you'd get rid of the nifty unless you upgraded it to the 1.4...so you could have 3 primes covering 30mm, 50mm, and 85mm if you held on to it, and then upgrade it later when you can afford to
