I've been semi-trolling for shots from both cameras (Especially the Perry Ge endorsed threads), but can't find a lot from the original 1DS. I just wanted to know what I would be missing if I bought the 1DS because it's considerably cheaper than the 5D used. I don't need the megapixels of course. But I do want full frame. Would I be missing any particular technology that would be essential to what I do? I shoot fashion and glamour.

After 35mm...I've only ever shot crop digital cameras, starting with the rebel XT, a brief experience with a 10D, 40D, and of course the XSi that I sold after a year. I really do miss 35mm, but I've slowly become spoiled by the convenience of digital.

Well I have never owned a 1Ds but have 5D and now 1Ds markII
Probably your iso can't go as high clean on a 1Ds?
But somebody know for sure here

Try to get a 5D its very good.
Real Good ISO performance!! Better han 1Ds methinks
If I could have got one, a 5D, good I would have
but this other 1 series came along otherwise 5D it would have been again.

Hmm, well I'll be using studio lighting/strobists setups a lot so I was thinking that high ISO wasn't that big a deal. But I do seem to sense a cleaner mood when I view ISO50 images from the 5D. I'm just scared the original 1Ds might not be able to read my memory cards or if the center AF wasn't as sensitive although 45 points might be better. I'm still doing a little more research I guess.

I believe on here people have said that batteries are expensive, battery life sucks, and the camera is slow to process images. Is a 1Ds II out of your league?

I'm pretty sure the 1Ds' AF points aren't any less sensitive than the 5D's - cross-types have been around since the professional EOS film bodies. As for memory, it's the same old CompactFlash I or II formatted in FAT32.

I saw a used 1Ds for about 1000USD, and I usually see 5D going for 200-500 dollars more on BH or Adorama. The 1Ds II used seems to come closer to a 5D II's price point and that's double what I want to spend on a body, hehe. I'm trying to fully embrace the culture of buying used bodies anyway.

I have both. 1Ds has a slower write buffer, so you get "busy" a lot sooner. Considering I no longer spray and pray, that's not a big deal for me. The 5D crushes the 1Ds when it comes to battery life and high ISO shooting. The 1Ds has better auto-focus.

If I could only keep one of my bodies, it would be the 5D. I love both, but the 1Ds is mainly relegated to when I want to shoot in poor weather. The 5D is my workhorse.

both great cameras
personally i have a 1ds and id have it over the 5d because it produces sharper looking images to my eyes, i dont need high ISO but as stated the 5d has better iso performance and battery performance.

the 1ds has 7 crosstype sensors and 44 horizontal type

its also good for self-defence :)

Ah, thanks guys. I can see where the battery life could be important, but is it that much worse? Also, does anyone know if the 5D and 5d II use the same battery? I could go look it up but I'm lazy =P

If the battery isn't that much worse, as in, if I could shoot for a couple of hours straight with all "one shot" shots I think it wouldn't be so bad. And if the IQ is just as good at ISO100 and close enough at ISO200 then I wouldn't go particularly crazy with a 1Ds. But then again, Perry Ge 5D threads, lol.

The 5D and 5D2 do not share batteries. The 5D2 introduced a new battery. The 5D shares batteries with all of the XXD bodies.

As for life, I'd say that i get double the shots with the 5D over the 1Ds. Figure around 400 shots with the 1Ds and around 800 with the 5D.

IQ wise, they're both awesome. ISO 100 and 200 would be hard to notice a difference between the two. At ISO 800 and above, the 5D wins hands down. I shoot a ton of low light shots (my default setting on my 5D is ISO 1600), so that greatly influences my decision.

If I have some time later tonight, I can take a few comparison shots for you between the two bodies.

1Ds MI is an 11mp CCD. If you have a studio flash environment all the time then I would go for the 1Ds. But if you are out of the studio in lower light environments, the get the 5D. But I don't think you will be disappointed with either choice. One Caveat, if you might be shooting quick moving objects, then go for the 1Ds.
