Why do I ask?

Well, I don't have green fingers, but I've got this little fella growing ok, and hope he'll soon be gobbling up any bugs (especially mosquitoes!) this summer.

So, show me just what a useless amateur I am, simultaneously impressing us all with your photographic skills by posting your favourite plants, flowers, tress, herbs, roots, tubers, fruit, whatever...

btw, your shots don't need to be macro, but as you can tell from the tip of the biro next to it, my little baby is still tiny....hopefully, I'll add another pic when he starts to feed!

Thanks Rob. In truth, I was sent it from the UK as a prezzie, as my brother heard mosquitoes here love my blood. When I dumped the contents of the plastic bag into the pot, all I could see was tiny specs of sand....I'm just hoping it gets a LOT bigger.

So Simon.. what is it? It's extremely interesting looking, but I can't figure out if it is animal or plant, lol. Very cool tho! Carla

Hey Carla, it is a plant and I think it's one of the Sundews - maybe Drosera Capillaris, but there was nothing on the packet to tell me. I've since found that there are about 180 types of "Sundew" insect-eating plants, so I'm just keen to see what happens when it gets bigger!

Meanwhile, please do add a pic or two to the thread........that's the idea!
:D

Well, you sure have a very cute insect-eating plant [or plant-ett as it may be for the time-being].. I'll have to see what shots I have to add, haven't done any macro this last week.. was out taking urban shots with my 17-85mm in preparation for an upcoming trip to SF... can't wait! Carla

Simon.. I hope my lowly dandelion is worthy for your thread .. it may be simple, but I think it has some punch to it, ha.

Hey Carla, that's so pretty! And please, don't use the words "worthy" and "your thread" in the same sentence about anything I post! Makes me sound like a pro' which I'm not! Just love creating.....with a camera, paint, pencil, you name it!

Please feel free to add anything you like.....

I've really enjoyed seeing your technique improve after you bought your 100mm macro, but I've been really busy in the mid-stages of setting up my new business, so haven't had time to check your latest pics.

I was just razzing you about the dandelion being "worthy"... at this point, I wouldn't post anything I'm not at least a little bit proud of, ha. I took a break from the 100mm this weekend and took out my 17-85mm to practice before an upcoming trip to San Francisco .. I posted some of my favorite shots on the Critique forum under "Venice Beach area" (the dandelion shot was also shot there), so feel free to check them out whenever. Good luck with your new business!! Okay, here's some bougainvilla from Venice .. with bokeh :)

Another lovely flower from you. Thanks for filling me in on what you've been up to, and thanks for the "good luck" too. More on that after July 27th!

For anyone who might be intrigued, finally found the name of my little bug-eater:

Drosera capensis.

And it now has 5 little sticky leaf-things.....maybe soon it'll start to feed properly.
I'll post as and when it captures a bug as that'll be a great opportunity for more macro.

:D

Oh I so now wished I was still living in the Netherlands, close to where I lived was this protected nature park and it had a shore next to a pond that was full of sundew!!!
They are so gorgeous cute plants and they eat my enemy so what's there not to love.
Whenever I go back for a visit I will go and take pictures there for sure, for now, you have to do with some beauty out of Texas.......
Enjoy!
