I am really interested in the canon 10-22mm lens.But, doesn't canon have a similar camera with,let's say,2.8f ? Is 3.5f enough?

and also, no lens like that , which is ef? (Thinking about upgradind to full-frame in the future and ef-s lens will not work)

The closest you will find with Canon is the 17-13 L 2.8. Or Tokina makes an 11-16 f 2.8, but I believe that wont work on FF either.

Generally 3.5-5.6 is fast enough for a 10-22 depends on what you want to accomplish with the lens. A general rule of thumb is 1/focal length for a shutter speed, at 10mm (or 16 if you factor in the crop) its fairly easy to get a suitable SS.

Also with a wide lens your DOF is going to pretty large regardless of you aperture setting.

I'm sure someone will have a more detailed answer, but that's my opinion. I have never had an issue with my Canon 10-22

Ultra wide angle lenses like the 10-22 are niche items, and most users do not need fast ultra wide. Making this lens a bit slower (the lens is really f/3.5-4.5) makes it smaller, lighter and more affordable.

and also, no lens like that , which is ef? (Thinking about upgradind to full-frame in the future and ef-s lens will not work)

Keep in mind that on a FF camera like a 5D a 20mm lens is already ultra wide. The absolute widest Canon EF zoom lens is the EF 16-35/2.8. Note that at 16mm on a FF camara this lens offers the same extreme wide angle for FF that 10mm does on 1.6X.

In essence, the EF-S 10-22 was designed to offer an ultra wide lens option for Canon's 1.6X shooters. To make it EF (FF compatible) would make it something else entirely, and the price would be several times as much.

Don't base a lens purchase today on what you're "planning" to do in the future. Buy based on your current needs/setup. The Canon lenses keep their value. The 10-22 is a strong UWA competitor. As for resale value, you can't go wrong with this lens. If and when you do make the switch to FF, sell the 10-22. You can find one used in the marketplace here and you'll probably not be out any money in the end when you resell it later.

Get the better lens... Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8. Faster lens and sharper. And on fullframe the Tokina works from about 12.5mm without vignetting.

10 is wider than 11 and 22 is certainly longer than 16.

Unless you have some overriding need for f2.8, get the Canon. I'm a pretty shaky hand holder but I have no problems getting perfectly steady shots with the 10-22 down to 1/focal length. So, 1/10s at 10mm.

Buy a used one. If and when you go FF, you can always sell it for what you paid for it and get a 16-35 or 17-40, depending on your budget.

Thanks Jeff. It makes perfect sense now.

This is the exact info I was looking for. Coincidentally, I was also just looking at the 10-20 wide angle lens, but hesitant in purchasing a lens that will not upgrade to a FF body.

Thanks for the explanation.

I will second this comment. Absolutely superb lens. This photo was taken inside a standard sedan, not a stretch limo.

Remember too that when taking in such a wide angle the lens is also taking in more light so a fast super wide is not necessary.

That doesn't make any sense.

If you could explain that, please. I'm curious.

huh?! The FOV of a lens has nothing to do with the amount of light entering it. It's still 3.5.

A 500mm 3.5 (if there is one) takes in just as much light as a 10mm 3.5

Honestly I find the 10-22 plenty fast, I generally always stop it down a bit for the types of things I use it for.

Yeah, that isn't correct. maybe you just mean that at such a wide angle, you don't need as fast a shutter speed? that's the only thing I can possibly think of.
